Crystal, I totally understand that it’s hard in the beginning not to feel like it’s not as rigorous because it is so different than what we grew up with.  However, I have come to discover that a Charlotte Mason education is quite rigorous and rich!  I just finished my first year and I have found it to be such a refreshing approach compared to more traditional approaches that I was raised with!  The things my kids have learned amazes me!  In fact, I am learning so much myself this go around and I’m having such a great time!  My kids don’t dread school and all the wonderful living books make it such a delight!  My child who started this school year as a 7 year old and is now 8, just labeled almost every single country on the continent of Africa!  He can tell me about the Egyptians and their culture and beliefs!  He can tell me about the many things they left behind and is quite familiar with the Bible (Creation through the Israelites entering the Promised Land)!  He learned so much about the culture and people by the families we met through Visits to..  We love Material a World and Hungry Planet!  I’ll take that over memorizing a list of facts and figures and textbooks any day! :).

Oh I didnt mean to imply I thought it wasnt rigorous, I think it is plenty challenging and produces a far richer education. But I often get sucked into what other people say, and like you said many people incorrectly think it is all read alouds and nature walks. Its so hard to quantify the thinking skills they are acquiring that people dismiss it I think.

Thank you for your response, I really need to chill. I have a terrible habit of wanting to have the next 10 years figured out. I spend so much time looking ahead I forget to enjoy now. I need to just try the SCM stuff and see how it works.

No, I completely relate!  When I first looked at Simply Charlotte Mason it just clicked with me and I thought it looked like a delightful way to teach my children.  However, there was this voice in the back of my head that wondered if it was adjust as good as all the drill and textbooks my friends were doing!  Now I know, it is so much better!  After our first year, I really see the beauty of a Charlitte Mason education and I’m so thankful for the SCM team putting so many wonderful resources together that make this journey even more delightful!  We are even doing the Strayor Upton math along with Rays New Primary  Arithmetic. I keep thinking, it has to be more complicated than this, but it’s just not!  I found a post a while back that I found so encouraging!  I will look for it and if I find it, I’ll share it!  🙂
