Hi there…I am wondering if I should start the history rotation with my soon to be 6 year old in the Fall, or if I should wait till the next year.  Did any of you try starting History right when they turn 6 and you found that they weren’t ready for it and wished you would of waited a year?

My son started history at 6, but it was just picture biographies and living history books on his level.   It was enjoyable.  I plan to do the same with my two girls, who are 5 and 6, this year.

We are starting SCM Genesis through Deuteronomy with my 2 kiddos who will be 5yo and 6yo (K and 1st) this fall. Well, I was planning on starting in the fall but my daughter (6yo) was so excited to learn about “all those people long ago” that we actually started a little this week. We are going very light, not using the commentaries or anything just doing the Bible readings, Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors (BIG hit with my 6yo!) and Visits to Africa. If I can find some of the other recomended books we will add those as we go along if there is interest. I got a Dover coloring book on Ancient Egypt so they color while I read as busy hands help with attention span. My son is not so interested, but since he is not formally schooling yet when he looses interest I don’t worry about it.

I don’t think it is “necessary” to do History at this age, but I think its a good way to start spreading the feast of ideas and it sure makes it more pleasant for me as I am very much a History person.

I started at six (July birthday) and wish I’d waited one more year.  You could easily just choose a variety of history picture books to read throughout the year.  No order needed.  Just enjoy learning about interesting people and places.

I would do a time period that they are interested in and/or just read some good books about all sorts of people from different times/places. I would not be worried about starting with year 1, unless that is what the child is interested in 🙂
