I was planning on using book 2 of Story of the World (Middle Ages) but I am not too impressed by it. I was looking at your Module 4 or 5 that would cover the Middle Ages but I have a question. Are we suppose to just read those books in the order that you have them listed? What about any additional activities? Do you have a guide for those Modules or do we just wing it? History is not one of my strong points and so I like the aspect of SOTW that it has activities and maps to go along with the reading. Are there other programs that would help me through this time period?

I have an 8 year old and a 6 year old and then my 4 year old loves to sit and listen and color the history pictures too…so I am not looking for anything really deep but just a good overview of history from a biblical perspective (without so much mythology or gruesome stories). I am ok with gruesome if it is real (Biblical stories) but not to much for Beowulf and stuff like that at this point.

Do you guys have any good suggestions on other history guides? Thank you.

    Hi Shelly ~

We too have used SOW and I agree that the activity guide is so easy to use. I liked the fact that I did’nt have to plan anything out since history is not a strong point of mine either. However I have been displeased with the fact that it doesn’t seem to come from a Biblical perspective. Unfortunalty I don’t believe that there is a guide like you are looking for (in comparison with SOW) to use with the Module 4 or 5.

You can, however, get some really good middle age coloring pages such as from Dover. Your little ones can color while you read. Your older can find the location on a map. They can do narrations after you’ve read and do some copywork or make illustrations of what you’ve read in a notebook. There are lots of good books on the bookfinder for that time-period. I hope this helps some what as I’m sure I’ve rambled. Blessings to you.

Thank you Heather. I am also wanting something that is from a Biblical perspective, like you said. Has anyone used Mystery of History? It looks great but not as user friendly as SOTW, but from what I can tell it is much more Bible based.

Truthquest History is lit. based and from Christian perspective:

Also, there is some great lit. at yesterday’s classics under World History, Greece and Rome, for a variety of ages, both a couple of options for a spine book and then family reading and independant readings. I don’t know your children’s ages, I assume around age 9+, but perhaps browse thru the site and gather some possibilities.

Combining the guide from Thruthquest and then a spine w/Lit. reading w/the excellent Dover coloring pages, and a timeline book/book of centuries/wall timeline would make for a very complete program. Don’t forget to maybe have the children dress up and put on plays/puppet shows. I think one of those modules involves Shakespeare so there’s an audio version of E. Nesbit’s book at Homeschool Racdioshows, Living Books for the EArs.

    Hope this helps,

I would also like to mention Jim Weiss’s other recordings to also supplement history. He breaks down his recordings according to year:

Thank you Rachel for all the resources. I will take a look and see what I can find. Thanks again. Shelly
