What are you planning for high school in terms of credits?  Just asking if this looks like what your child will graduate with after your CM education.

    Language Arts 4
    Mathematics 3-4
    Science 3-4
    American History 1
    American Government 1
    World History 1
    Physical Education 2
    Foreign Language 2-4
    Electives 4-8

I thought it was interesting that if you look at the SCM forum cloud … topics most often tagged … History ranks #1.  I feel like we will have covered far more than the required 2 credits when we are done with our CM plans.  There doesn’t seem to be much emphasis on History for hs graduation or college entrance.  I’m curious as to why we cycle this one subject and not some others?

Because it’s the most fun, in my opinion.  🙂

That looks about right to me. My state requires 1/2 a credit in Government and 1/2 a credit in Economics instead of 1 full credit in Government. It also requires 1/2 credit in health and 1/2 a credit in P.E.

I did find that most of the electives just took care of themselves in our homeschool. My evaluator told me that would be the case and it was. Most of our kids have so many hobbies and things going on that it’s quite easy to count up the electives. The challenge comes in narrowing it down to just 6 because 2 of the 8 have to be foreign language if your child plans on college.

As far as history overkill-I’ve seen moms really pare down on the history in highschool because science and math take so long. For my son, we worked his history reads into his literature credit so that we were killing 2 birds with one stone. History is probably the favorite subject in our home so I have a hard time paring it down.

I’d say CM education definitely emphasizes history in a way our current society doesn’t. Everything is STEM subjects because people think that’s what you need for technology jobs — and that is their goal,  producing workers and paychecks. Our goal is building people.

well said, Nebby — Our goal is building people: well-rounded, truly educated, and able to think people.

My oldest son did history every year even only two credits were required. It is foundational, IMO, so we always do history.

Don’t misunderstand!  We LOVE History here too.  It’s a favorite and I don’t plan to pare it down in high school.  I just find it interesting in looking at the forum and the areas most often agonized over and then comparing that to graduation/entrance requirements.  Basically, if they’re getting a brief skimming (and I can hardly think 2 years would be more than that) then that’s a-ok with our educational culture!  Wow.  Kinda sad to my History-loving way of thinking.

I remember reading about CM that History is the tree from which all other subjects branch.  That’s how I’ve handled it thus far, but it is interesting.  I can also see how those Maths and Sciences would take up a good deal of time too.  It makes the whole issue of balancing a little more challenging for those of us with college bound students.  But just a little.

I’m going to figure out what I think we’ll actually end up having earned through our CM education.  I think my kids would enjoy seeing it all.  Of course we won’t use it all on their applications or transcripts but I know that they would enjoy seeing that all this hard work paid off over and beyond what was required/normal/traditionally being done.  That still matters!

Yes, it can be a juggling act.  We did history every year but he only received 2 credits. He also earned 5 math credits and 6 science credits.  I gave him credit for all those so the entire progression would be on his transcript and he was going into a science field.  But yes, I wasn’t going to skimp on what I felt was one of the most important subjects for the sake of state requirements.  We exceeded them but it is kind of frustrating that we have to try to fit into a certain mold.
