I have a rising 2nd grader and we have been studying Gen – Deut and Ancient Egypt loosely this year.  By that I mean we are doing all of the Bible and Visits to Africa…but the only other book we read was “Boy of the Pyramids.”  We have done a good deal of other Ancient Egypt readings.  I also have a 4 year old and a 2 year old so I’m thinking ahead a little.  I feel like we’re on overload with ancient history right now and was thinking we could skip the next 2 modules and move into the Middle Ages.  If we did that for 2nd grade, then once my middle child was in 1st, we would be on Module 6.  Then we could start back over with Module 1 and my oldest would do it more in depth because she would be in 6th.  For those of you who have gone through SCM, what do you think about that plan?  I’ve also thought about taking a year off at some point to do a year with The Prarie Primer or something like that.

We did that and it worked great!

I sort of combined year 1 and 2 into one year skipped year 3 and went to 4 (Renn & Reff) this year. We have really enjoyed this years books! We are moving into year 5 (Early American) this coming year.

I struggled with Ancients and young ones, just not as many younger book options, but Mod. 4, 5, & 6 have a bigger selection and fit us better for younger grades.

We combined Modules 1, 2, and 3 for our history this year.  It meant moving faster, but it was better for us.  We plan to use Module 4 next year.

    @Karen,

I’m wondering what ages your children are.  Also, what books did you use for module 3 at your accelerated pace?

You can use whichever books in whichever order you feel like it.  We used SCM’s Ancient Egypt Guide, then switched to MOH 1 because I wanted a 4 year program.  Ironically, MOH took us 2 years to complete and by adding in the year we spent on SCM’s Mod 1, we’re basically using a 6 year program!  lol

We are switching back to Module 4 for next year for a few reasons.  There is no rule that it must be completed in a specific order (and specific timeline).

My girls are ages 10, 9, 7, and 5.  If you tell me your email address, I can email you a pdf of our plan.  I planned it out using the SCM Planning guide and it really helped me get it all on paper.

Now, real life happened, and it didn’t work out exactly as it was on paper — but that’s okay.

I really stuck close to the Mod. 3 book list.  Some we never got to, but again, I’m okay with that.

At those young ages, I had us go quickly through modules 2 – 4 time periods so we could get to American history where we spent more time at younger ages.  So I think we did only 4 to 6 weeks on each of those time periods so they would still have some familiarity with it, and we used a family timeline.  One of the books we used was the Usborne Time Traveler, but in chronological order.  You could use Hillyer’s Child’s Book of History.  The next time around, we spent one year on modules 1 – 3, and will have a full year using SCM module 4 guide next year.

@Karen, No, I wasn’t looking for a plan specifically. I was just wondering how many books & which ones you used for Ancient Rome. I am curious as to how many books you fit into 12 or 13 weeks (assuming that you spread the 3 Ancients fairly equally over the school year).

I see that there are 5 books pertaining to the history portion of Module 3 in the family books section alone, and 3 or more for each range of grades.

    Thanks.

We are on year six this year and while I did go through years 2 and 3 separately I got bogged down in it. So this next year we are taking a year off and when we start the rotation again I am combing Greece and Rome into one year. So I think your plan is fine!

Thanks all!  I would love to see any plans.   mckenziepeck at gmail dot com

I thought about doing some books about Ancient Greece, Rome, and China “just for fun” this summer but honestly I don’t think my daughter will ever choose those books.  I may keep them out in case she wants to look through them on her own.  And then start with a “brief” timeline type overview in the fall before we skip ahead.  That way, she can see that ancient history is more than just Egypt but we don’t have to spend a lot of time on those now.

Oh Karen please share plans for combining. I like the idea of combining….but then I know that means skipping some, and that’s the ahrd part for me, skipping!

I know this is an older feed, but if you still have the plan for combining those three years, I would love to see it. rebekah302 at yahoo dot com. Thanks, @Karen!
