I’m just starting out in the CM method. I have been looking at the history modules, and I’m confused. If I read the books suggested in a module,is that all I need for history?? Do we just read the books,or do I ask them to do narration?
I read Charlotte’s methods on each subject. The outline on this site states that we are to read a “living” biography or two about a key person in the time period we are studying. So that sounds like all I need to do is read living books. If this is the case,my kids are going to eat this up!!! It sounds fun and engaging.
As far as finding the books that are suggested goes, our library has none of them. How do I know if I am getting a true living book? How do I choose them? Are books, such as the ones in the American Girl series, considered living books??
How long does it typically take to go through a module? Is it likely that I will be doing more than one module in a year?
This post on selecting living books might be helpful. Usually a living book is written by one person (as opposed to a committee) who has a passion for the subject. The books is written in a conversational tone to the reader or in a narrative/story style. It involves your emotions and imagination and, so, pulls you into the story. You’ll see more specifics on that blog post linked above.

You should be able to comfortably do one module per year. Feel free to slow down or speed up according to your family’s needs, but the “average” pace would be one per year.
