We just began our new school year and we are doing the Modern Times history module. This is our second year doing SCM. However, the readings this year are taking my family at least an hour to complete, if not more, with Stories of the Nation, the 4-6th grade readings, and narrations. My 7th grader reads her books independently, but my two boys need me to read the material to them. I feel like I am doing something wrong for it to be taking so long. I am following the guide as it is written. My kids keep mentioning how much time we spend on history as opposed to other subjects. Any advice?
Okay, there are many possibilities you could consider.
1. Remember that if you are reading aloud it takes longer than someone reading on their own silently. (Once they are a solid reader). So if reading aloud is a must for all the books you need to accept that history will take longer.
2. If #1 is true you may want to consider looking for some of the books on audio book and assign them to be listened to independently.
3. Or you could choose a few books to let go of, and not do. You don’t have to do everything or learn everything this school year or this time through the history time period. Break up the readings you are keeping over more days. For example if the Stories of the Nations and the other chapter book are to be read on the same day consider doing them on alternate days.
4. Or you could keep all the books and just go at a slower pace. This means the module will last you more than 1 school year. That is ok, if you can live with it. There is no hurry.
5. Keep all the books and break up history into two reading times per day. For example do half the reading early in the day and do the rest after doing several other subject, maybe early afternoon or over lunch time.
I’m sure there are other possibilities! Just wanted to get you thinking.
Thank you! These are excellent suggestions! My boys have, in the past, when trusted to read on their own, not actually read but skimmed briefly. They are both good readers (ages 8 and 10), but they DO NOT like to read. I don’t feel I can trust them to do the reading independently right now. I will definitely use some of your suggestions. They mostly have a hard time with Stories of … They aren’t as interesting to them as the other readings are.
