I’m looking for some good documentaries on dvd (we don’t have cable or netflix) and also some good websites for module 1 history for my autistic son. He enjoys history somewhat, but he reads at about a 3rd grade level or so, and emotionally he’s often around that of a 10-year old, so I need things that he could follow. However, he is 14, so nothing too young in content or he’ll realize it’s kind of “babyish,” which he doesn’t like.

I’d appreciate anything suggested, and if there are any interactive websites, maybe with some games, that would be nice for him. He listens to short readings fairly well, but he does get distracted & bored after awhile. I thought dvd’s or websites would shake things up a bit for him.

    Thanks.

Sue, here is a post about Module 1 with some links to additional threads with ideas:

There are lots of Ancient Egypt documentaries from National Geographic that show inside the pyramids, the tombs, temples, and other places that show what the hieroglyphics have to say about the Ancient Egyptian way of life. We check them out of the library all the time. We really liked this one (which is now available online for free):

We haven’t seen these but they look interesting:

BBC The Mystery of the Rosetta Stone  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHFuoP_QrXM

BBC Life and Death in the Valley of the Kings   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pMyprT7gOo

I find documentaries all the time on YouTube. I am careful about who I choose to watch, but there are so many cool things out there.

We have also enjoyed the Drive thru History shows: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=drive+thru+history+full+episodes&oq=drive+thru+his&gs_l=youtube.1.1.0l9j0i5.2250.7614.0.9742.18.16.2.0.0.0.116.1456.12j4.16.0…0.0…1ac.1.11.youtube.5DBgs3qDnYw

The National Gallery of Art has a free education department that lets you check out VHS/DVD’s about all kinds og things. We checked out some about Ancient Egypt and learned a lot – we saw King Tut’s fancy gold jewelry up close. My kids still recognize it as his. 😉 It is free to join, you have the videos for 2 months, and pay to ship them back. It costs me less than $3 fto mail it back 2 videos.

Here are some old threads with some fun ideas for module one:

http://simplycharlottemason.com/scmforum/topic/peeps-at-many-lands-ancient-egypt – this book is available as an audiobook through librivox.org – maybe he could build a sugarcube/lego pyramid while listening?

I found a book called Once Upon A Time in Egypt that we got through the library. It was a delightful living book along the lines of Boy of the Pyramid. It tells about 3 boys – a landowner’son, an artisian’s son and a farmer’s son – who are friends on a plantation in ancient Eygpt and follows some of their adventures and allows you to see how the lives of all in Egypt depended on all of their jobs and cooperation. They even go hunting hippos! The artwork was pretty cool too. 😉

Thanks for the links. I think I remember seeing the part about National Geographic, but I couldn’t find it earlier! They don’t seem to have the Once Upon a Time…book at any of our nearby libraries (or through ILL), but I’ll keep looking.
