This year I would like to try SCM history. I will have a 7th and 10th grader. The 10th grader has read only a couple of American History stories – George Washington, General Grant. We never really made it to the civil war or anything modern. I guess I will not show a History credit for his 9th grade year. I’m thinking American History for 10th grade, World History for 11th and Government for Senior year. I would like to try SCM because of the implemented Bible and geography.
My questions are, which module would I use to cover the American History? Would you do it differently, time period wise? Does it matter what module you start with? He will definitely not beable to go thru all of them in the 3 years he has left. Do you enjoy the SCM modules? This would be our together time for reading aloud and discussions, is it alot? I work outside the home, does this require alot of time on the parents part. I do not mind an hour to go thru all of the daily read aloud with them.
What I love about the SCM guides, besides the book choices, is that they are “open and go”. Open a book, read, narrate, done. I have 3 kids 3 and under besides my school-aged child, so I don’t have time (or sanity) for advanced prep work.
Our history lesson plans guides teach American history alongside world history. Completing Early Modern & Epistles for 10th grade would give your son a 1/2credit in American history and a 1/2 credit in world history. Completing Modern Times & Epistles, Revelation will give your son another 1/2 credit in American history and a 1/2 credit in world history. So, completing both studies gives one full credit in American history and one full credit in world history.
You will need to add a separate government course and possibly an economics course to meet requirements for graduation and college transcripts.
