I am currently a Sonlight user but am considering switching to SCM with my 9 th grader and 3 younger children. I have a few questions…

Is it recommended to start from the first module or can we jump in with any time period?

Once you have completed all the history guides will you have also read the entire Bible? Or are there parts that are not covered?

Do any of you read everything aloud to your children? I have some children who have visual difficulties and so I usually read aloud a lot. Sonlight is getting a bit overwhelming with the amount of reading we have to do. Any thoughts on this as to how it compares time wise to Sonlight?

You can start in any time period.  We started at the beginning since we hadn’t covered ancients before.

It doesn’t go through the entire Bible, but it does cover large portions of it.  The first module covers most of Genesis, Exodus, and Numbers (older DC would study Leviticus as well).  There are also some lessons over Deuteronomy.  Most of what we’ve skipped has been the longer geneology passages.

I’ve been reading everything aloud to my DC, but will probably have them take over some readings next year.  I’m sure it is less reading than Sonlight!  We previously used Heat of Dakota and I was overwhelmed by the amount of reading…SCM is not overwhelming at all.  Usually we read a chapter of a book or a chapter of the Bible.

I ditto Holly! I was stresses by the SL schedule and I only had one child at the time (our first year). SCM is much more manageable but still thorough. And with SCM you have time to do things like picture study and composers in a CM way. And yep, just start at whatever time period you prefer. I’ve really enjoyed the Bible and would likely buy the guides just for that. HTH some:) Gina

Yes, this helps- thank you! My problem is that I get so excited when I get my next year of SL . I love all the books and am anxious to read them all. But- we end up getting bogged down in the year and then I start to feel stressed that we won’t get done ( and we usually don’t get done in a year). It seems to me like with SCM there are fewer books per year so we can “savor” the books rather than trying to rush through them just to “keep up” with the schedule. But then I think, what about all those other books that look so good- we will be missing out on reading those…..does that make sense? So many books, so little time……sigh!

I know exactly how you feel!  I loved the HOD books, but they were cutting into our 3Rs time and we struggled to get through each day.  I’m getting used to “savoring” the books, but I have to really hold myself back when planning another year.  Realistically, we can’t get through everything I’d like to cover.

The extra books can be in a book basket for them to choose for free reading time or summer reading. This way you can add in where their schedule allows but not feel bad if something doesn’t get read.

There are family books for you to read aloud and other books for independent reading for different grade levels. You can make it what you want it to be for your family. We tried an earlier grade of SL and I found it a lot of reading and too constricting because there was no time to add in other books of interest. I think SCM is less time consuming than SL.
