I have 4 kids – 3, 5, 9, 12. We’re finishing our first cycle through history this year. Next year, I know that I’d like to add in something along these lines.

Here are the options that I am considering:

How Should We Then Live? by Francis Schaeffer – dvds, but geared to high school so best saved a while yet

Truthquest History by Michelle Miller – I love the idea and the commentary and I know others have worked these into the SCM framework successfully, but it overwhelms me a bit to think of doing this.

What in the World? by Diana Waring – cds, these could work for all of my age kiddos.

    Any thoughts?

My kids (7, 12, and almost 16) all LOVE the TQ guides with the SCM handbooks. They found the What in the World CD’s…….annoying……and the very rapid rate of speaking hard to follow. Listen to some samples and see what you think…..maybe it was just us 🙂

Schaeffer is definitely for the older crowd. You can find the episodes free on YouTube.

If you just want to add some worldview without the history commentary, Apologia has a nice curriculum.

Another vote for Truthquest.  I have not combined them with SCM guides yet, because I wanted to focus only on American history in the younger years, and then move onto World history for the older years, but in the 5 years that we’ve been using the younger guides, we’ve absolutly loved them, and it’s so easy to find a book/books that is appealing to all my age groups.  (10, 7, 5 and 2 – and for a while we had a 12 and 14 yo thrown into the mix.)

I started using TQ, but once I bought All Through the Ages, it became unnecessary.

Now I mainly use ATtA and Ambleside.

My children really enjoyed the What in the World…series. My son has listened to the cd’s several times each. She’s alittle over-exuberant at times in the Ancients one, but it’s still good. Unfortunately, she stops at the Korean War so I’ll have to go with SOTW for that section.

I’m not familiar w/What in the World. TQ and SCM are working well for us, and both rec. ‘How Should We Then Live” in high school…that will be a must for us to read or view when the kids are a bit older.  Hope you find a good fit:)

Oh, and it may be just me, but I think the overwhelming part of SCM/TQ is the huge booklist in TQ. So I just read the commentary…I pencil the page #’s into my SCM guide. Otherwise I’d never be able to narrow the books down to a reasonable amount to complete a TQ guide in one year!!
