My son will be in the 8th grade next year.  As I have been ordering books for the next school year, he has asked for some more good history books.  He really loves all history.   He asked me about Red Badge of Courage and although I read it back in the day, I don’t remember much about it.  Thoughts??   I would appreciate any recommendations you ladies give on books I can get for him.  Thanks in advance!

Joseph Altsheler has fantastic historical fiction books. Altsheler’s books are historically accurate and well written. He wrote several books, including several series, on American history. His series on the Civil War/War Between the States is outstanding. The books in the series alternate between the North and the South so you gain a perspective from both sides of the war. Altsheler’s books are available for free as ebooks at Gutenberg.

A great resource for lists of good history books is Christine Miller’s book All Through the Ages. Miller’s book lists reference books, biographies, nonfiction, and historical fiction books by time period and by grade level. She gives a brief statement about most books listed too. It’s a great resource to have on hand when you need alternate or extra titles for any history time period.

Take a look at Rosemary Sutcliff’s books. She mainly wrote about Roman-occupied Britain, but from so many different angles that her books never get old, at least for me. I don’t have any sons, but I have always thought her books would be uniquely appealing to boys because most of the main characters are boys and men, and she writes with such incredible detail. Her books are some of the few that fulfill that oft-repeated phrase, I felt like I was THERE. They are rich and wordy and won’t appeal to everyone, but they are worth searching for. Some are easy to find, but many require a bit of a search to find. Totally and completely worth it!
