After a couple of years of trying different things for history, I have found that our favorite way of doing things is to pick a spine, and add in other books along the way. Other than narrating and the book of centuries, we don’t have any other activities planned in.
Are there any good activity books out there for crafts, map work, etc?
We have a couple of the Bellerophon coloring books, and the Draw and Write Through History books. One time we got the Classical Kids activity guide from the library and that was well-liked here. Do they have more of that series? What about the Story of the World activity guides?
I’m going to have a baby in about a month, so I have even been considering going with a planned history curriculum for this year. MFW or HOD. But I would only use the history portion so I’m not sure it would be worth it.
My first option would be to use All Through The Ages to teach history, and move through history as fast or slow as we need to. I just need a good activity book or something to add to it. My daughter is very crafty and would love to do more. She is 8 and we are just now getting into the Roman time period.
There are several activity books on history. You can search on Rainbow Resource by time period…I think they have an ancient Rome section. We haven’t studied this time, so I can’t personally recommend any.
Have you looking into History Pockets? You could print the pages out and organize them before your baby is due. It’s mostly cut and paste activities though. We have used HOD in the past with great success as well.
https://handsnhearts.com/blog/2012/10/kit-of-the-month/ She has kits for lots of historical studies where you do all kinds of different activities based on the culture/history that you are studying. I know that she had one for each of these Ancients: Egypt, Greece and Rome.
Story of the World (like Jeaninpa recommends) is a good all-in-one resource with many ideas included. I use mine quite often. I also have wonderful All Through the Ages guide, but sometimes a simple spine like SOTW is just what a busy mom needs to lean on when needing quick ideas. 🙂
We like illustrating/reenacting what we are studying. No guide necessary. ;0)
I use the SCM History/Geography/Bible module guides. We do simple map studies alongside or geography spine, Bible notebooks with GOAL, and the term exam suggestions that are usually hands on projects. If I look ahead of time at these, I can brainstorm other things to do each term if we have time for extras.
Discovering Great Artists has hands on projects for learning art through an artist during particular time periods. Also, check out the juvenile non-fiction section of your library for activity books that tie to specific times in history. Might save you some $.
I have found some amazing resources by just googling the topic we are studying too. I have found tons of videos on youtube about Ancient Greece, a site that has a typewritter in hierglyphics for Ancient Egypt, coloring pages, how to do projects… sometimes I do it early and jot it down in my teachers guide at the appropriate time so I don’t forget.
I like The Story of the World activity book. To see if you like it check it out at your library. We had one in our inter library loan and I was excited to thumb threw it first. It really helped to see if I would like it first. It gives you questions to ask about the stories in the book. It also gives you other books you can read. I also have “All through the ages.” I love this one because it tells you good books and guides you threw but doesn’t have the activity pages. I also have “Homeschooling in the woods” for activities to do for lapbooking. I do like the detail they have and the information they have. They are wonderful but I don’t think I would do it if I was going to have a baby. Just me though. 🙂 IMA I would go with SOTW. I bought mine fairly cheap used. It came with the book. I then decided that I would like to have the kids listen to them in the car if we have to go somewhere so I also purchased the CD’s of the book. He does a great job of reading and I really like listening to the CD’s. So, if you arn’t feeling well it is nice to just put in the CD and listen. I was always tired and not feeling well when I was having a baby and liked listening more than reading. I could save myself for reading something else like Science ect… Hope you feel better than I did and wish you all the luck with your decision on the Activity book.
