I have failed miserably in the area of mathematics for my two 16yo daughters. They are both headed to community college next year, but will need to “test in” to the highschool to college program. We’ve tried working together thru a basic college text, and also used Teaching Textbooks. Neither worked for them. We need to start from fractions/ decimals and move upwards. What would you suggest to get them up to speed in the next year?
Have you looked at http://www.systemath.com ? This is a great program for older students to strengthen their foundation in math. You might want to look at their highschool course called “Math Rescue” or start at the first module which is fractions/decimals. We switched from TT to Systematics Math this year. My ds is grasping math now more than ever. Thanks to Caroline here at SCM for referring it!
There’s a program called “Mastering Essential Math Skills”. There are topic-specific books (eg. fractions, decimals), and there are some that cover many topics. The latter come with a tutorial DVD. Here’s a link for more info, sample pages, table of contents, etc. It uses short, daily lessons, and is really well priced, imo.
