I’ve been using the SCM curriculum guide for choosing our Literature selections. My oldest is fifteen so he would be reading books from module 10 and I was going to have him read The Hound from Baskersville. I was wondering, would you read this aloud to all children or would you assign it independently and would you require narrations?
You might want to take into consider is the age of the other children as well. If you have a child with a vivid imagination as well as a bit on the sensitive side, you might not want to read this one aloud. It’s been a few years since I’ve read it, but I believe the descriptions of the dogs might upset younger children.
Personally, I enjoy The Hound of the Baskervilles, so I might read it aloud to my kiddos. However, in general if there is a book that is specifically for the older children, I have them read it. Here lately I’ve been asking for an oral narration, but not always. I will have them narrate all they can tell me from their books the week that we do our “testing”.
I had my girls read their own literature and then do essays or reviews on them as well as discuss storylines and analysis type things with me, ie., what they got out of the book – the characters and plot etc. Sometimes I would have them rewrite a portion of the story (and I mean a small portion) from the point of view of one of the characters, they always enjoyed this, and they chose which character to use. We read essays and short stories together over tea, but in general they read the complete books alone. They enjoyed The Hound of the Baskervilles by the way. Linda
Jacqleene- I don’t always have time to read my children’s literature selections ahead of time but this time I did and really enjoyed the book. I think my younger children would too but there is so much other literature I’d like to read to them more within their age group that I wasn’t sure.
Linda- My highschool years were quite a while ago and I wouldn’t know where to start with asking for essays or having any type of analysis. Did you use a resource for this?
