We’ve not done much with Geography the last few years, except locating the places we read about on the map and using Material World & Hungry Planet. Now my oldest is moving onto 10th grade and I need to cover a Geograhy credit for highschool. Are there any resources you would recommend? Thanks a bunch!

Though I have not yet purchased it, Trail Guide to World Geography is the one that I will considering for my children. I was using a different curriculum when my two eldest covered geography, and while they learned what that needed to know, it was not particularly CM-ish in nature. This sounds like it is a living book (with CD-rom) that fits CM standards.

Thanks, Jacqleene. At this point, I don’t mind if its not CM in nature. I just want it to be interesting and engaging. I also need it to be something he can use independantly and would like it to cover both physical and cultural geography. Hope my order isn’t too tall. Can I ask what you used when your older dc were in highschool? Thanks again ~ Heather

I know this is meant for elementary children but have you looked at Ann Voskamp’s books, A Child’s Geography: Explore His Earth or A Child’s Geography: Explore the Holy Land? I don’t know what most highschool geography books contain but A Child’s Geography: Explore the Holy Land has a lot of information and I find it fascinating myself.

Teacherme2learn, thanks so much for the suggestion. We actually used Ann’s ACG, back when my highschooler was in 5th grade. I’m afraid if I pulled it out again, he’d think it was too “young” for him – still remembers coloring the post cards. Though like you I learned SO much and wouldn’t mind going through Explore the Holy Land with my younger boys. Blessings, Heather

How about Runkle’s Geography (this one doesn’t cover cultural geography), or BJU Cultural Geography (samples online at Christianbook)?

Thanks Gaeleen. In looking at samples & reading reviews in several places, these both look like something ds would enjoy. Since each are only 1 semester courses, I’m wondering if Runkles Physical Geography AND BJU Cultural would be a good fit to cover a full highschool credit of Geography. Any thoughts? My oldest actually enjoys textbooks in the mix – strange I know. Thanks again ~ Heather

Not strange – we like textbooks in the mix also. I own Runkles and have thumbed through Cultural Geography. Unfortunately, I can’t give you first hand experience as my oldest is just turning thirteen. Some good friends of ours (veteran homeschoolers with twelve children) use both and highly recommend them for high school. We plan to use both (barring some superior option between now and then).

Does anyone have experience with Abeka’s Cultural Geography? How does it compare to the BJU geography?

I don’t have experience with Abeka yet, but I bought it for this upcoming year. It looks packed with information and I really like the map exercises. I just hope it’s not too dry but we’ll see. The only comparison I can make with BJU is that Abeka is a one-semester course and BJU is a full year. Hopefully someone else will know more than me.
