How many books do you choose for History?  Do you use a spine?

How many Historical Fictions or Biographies do you add?

How many do you add for Literature?  Do you just do narrations on the history and lit?

I am thinking of getting Ancient History Portfolio to add to it and a Timeline.

I’m curious of how others plan.

    Thank youCool

    Marsha,

My daughter will begin high school studies in the fall, so I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination.  Here is a tentative plan.

    * SCM History and Bible modules 1-3 at the grade 7-9 level as written – one module/term.

    * We will use The Greenleaf Guide to Ancient Literature (4 books + Bible readings)

You can see it at http://www.cbd.com ; it includes assignments.

    * I will require written narrations on all History readings and on Bible readings as assigned in the SCM guides.

    Blessings,

    Heather

I have much younger kids than Scherger5, mine are 7 and 5.

How many books we choose for history depends on what kind of book we are using.  If we are using a chapter book, we usually stick to just the chapter book, maybe I’ll throw in one or 2 picture books too if they stand out.  We use a spine.  We are studying American History with TruthQuest, so we use The light and the Glory for kids as our spine currently along with this country of ours.

For Literature, we have one book for a read aloud, and one book for assigned reading.  I try to choose a family book that will appeal to all of them (we are currently reading through the Little House series), and then for assigned reading, I choose books that are appropriate to their reading level and that I think they’ll find interesting.  Right now my 7yo is reading through the Phantom Tollbooth (he reads it on his own, 15 minutes a day – he’s reading at or about a 6th grade level, so no problem there) and my daughter and youngest son(2yo) join me on the couch for their assigned reading.  I pick a book off the 1000 good book list http://www.classical-homeschooling.org/celoop/1000-primary.html and we read the same book once a day for the week.

We do Narrations (orally) for both history and Literature.  I have my older son do a book of the centuries.  He narrates to me all he knows about X topic, and I type it up on the computer.  He’s very artistic, so he tends to like to draw a picture or 2 to go along with what he learned to put in the BOC.
