Bookworm…your posts are spot on! I have graduated one student and we found that as much as we love CM, we had to use textbooks for a few subjects to really get the meat of the topic.
My son uses a textbook for Biology—a public school text. We have found it to be excellent with practical labs. I do have the teacher’s edition, which is a must.
He also uses a textbook for Geography—again, a ps text. It has covered Geography in a way that we could not have done using other resources. We actually started out the year using The Trail Guide to World Geography. Although I appreciate the way that resource teaches, it just didn’t have the depth that our textbook has.
And for Algebra 1, he uses a CC level Introductory Algebra text. It is the best we have found for explanations, number of practice problems, solutions manual and video tutor.
We try to incorporate CM in other ways…with our Literature studies, Nature Study, Art Appreciation, Handicrafts…and we encourage pursuing personal interests, which happens daily here.
Glad to hear from CMers that adjust and adapt for “today”. I think many textbooks are a far cry from what was available back in the day…I think Charlotte would approve of so much more today.
Thanks for this thread…it was helpful and confirming.
