I am looking for some geography books for my ninth grader and thought the book finder would be a good source of reading material. However, I am getting an error message and can’t access the resource. Is anyone else getting an error message? And, in the meantime, does anyone have any living book selections? Thanks!
Also, I remember reading that there was an alternative book selection for the Joshua Slocum book. Can someone please post the title of that book, please?
We also included books like Material World and Hungry Planet when we did a year of world geography for my high school and younger kids as a family. And lots of other picture books, current events, research, etc. The Visits to.. series wasn’t available then.
Geography is my favorite subject and I have a couple suggestions that I hope you will find useful. We are just finishing up reading aloud Around the World in Eighty Days which is great for geography. I also read aloud Josh Slocums’ book and my kids did enjoy it but the favorites for me that I read for my self were Kon Tiki and The Ra Expiditions by Thor Heyerdahl and The Brendan Voyage by Tim Severin.
My kids are really enjoying Halliburton’s Complete Book of Marvels this year, too. I think that book would be an enjoyable read for a high schooler who hasn’t read the book before.
Thank you, all, for the HS geography reading suggestions! In my quest yesterday, I found a couple that may be interesting, also. Has anyone read 360 degrees of Longitude or Stowaway? Thoughts on either, or both?
I just tried to access the Book Finder, again to no avail. I have been trying on my iPad. Perhaps that is the reason? Anyway, I’ll try to access it on my laptop later to see if that makes a difference.
We would love to help you with using the CM Bookfinder.

If you get in touch through our contact form we’ll probably be able to respond quicker than here.
I have Stowaway but haven’t read it yet. So I can’t help you there. Another possible geography book might be (I’m going to use it this year with my kids for geography) is Last of the Breed by Louis L’Amour. It covers Russia in depth. Another possibility although not a book is The Long Road Down and The Long Road ‘Round; which were on Netflix earlier this year. They are done by Ewan Mcgregor (Star Wars) and while there is a lot of bad language and a couple episodes that contained some adult content (I would preview), they were awesome for geography. To get a sense of an area or country. I quite enjoyed them.
Thank you, Doug! The link you posted worked for me, and I was able to use the Book Finder :-). However, when I click on the ‘Plan CM’ tab and choose ‘CM Bookfinder’, I am still getting the message – ‘Safari cannot open the page because it could not load any data.’ I am on my iPad; could that be the problem? Again, your link worked perfectly, though, so I’m not sure that’s the cause? I’ll just bookmark your link to use for the time being. Thank you, again!
We read Stowaway a few years back (based on recommendations within the thread that Tristan linked in her post above), and we found it to be more engaging than Sailing Alone, the Slocum book. We pulled out a map every few readings and tracked where the ship was in the story as we read.
We have also used one of the SCM “Visits to….” books, and this year we will be starting Visits to Europe with my 15yo and 17yo. It uses Material World and Hungry Planet by Peter Menzel, which we have enjoyed before. Those pictures in the Menzel books are really worth a thousand words, but they are not short on facts and descriptions of family life and culture of the countries visited.
