My oldest child is in 9th grade and we are looking for a good basic writing program. She completed all of Winston grammar in 8th grade , (we are a once and done grammar family). I am looking for a good maybe polishing up resource and also a resource that teaches the basics of writing. I wouldn’t mind an affordable online class. She has only done creative writing, and some basic research writing for her AP biology class. Would anyone be willing to share what has worked for them? I am not looking for IEW type curricula it is too expensive for our budget. Thanks so much
DD16 used Jump In in middle school, took a class via http://www.classesbybethplus.com using Essay Styles as a summer intensive course (It is offered as a year long course there, too. It can be taught at home, too.) which she would highly recommend. We used Sharon Watson’s Power In Your Hands last year and dd did not enjoy it nearly as much as Jump In or Essay Styles. She learned, but preferred the others.
This is an area I’m having trouble with right now. Oldest two used IEW and gleaned a lot from that (especially his High School Intensive Essay DVD). One of them also used Power In Your Hands but didn’t care for it. It’s my next two that I can’t seem to find a fit for. They’re 15, one of them an extremely reluctant writer. They didn’t like Jump In and we’re currently trying Jensen’s Formal Writing. It’s very early in the program but some of the prompts are not worded naturally and are strange directions. Also the DVD does not match up to the pages in the book. Hoping it improves…will keep you posted.
Thanks so much! Have any of you ever used So-verbose? My daughter is a little reluctant to be in an online live class. She is a science/math kid, English just isn’t her favorite. She is a very reluctant writer, and tends to be intimidated just at the thought of having to write.
My 10th grader is using the Power in Your Hands nonfiction writing course from Writing by Sharon Watson. It’s not her favorite curriculum ever, but nothing is really going to be a favorite for her in the nonfiction writing arena. She loves to write fiction and writes outside of her Power in Your Hands assignments. I told her she needed a solid introduction to the various forms of essay writing and this one does it well. So she’s trudging through. 😉 It does to a pretty good job of having them write about things they might relate to. For example one of the first projects is an opinion piece (I think) on teens owning credit cards. She had to think about, research, and decide just what her position is on what is a very relevant to her age topic, then write about it.
