I don’t know what state you are in, but different states have different hourly requirements for credits. I live in PA. In this state 120 hours is equal to one credit or completion of a textbook. Some states have less hourly requirements. For statistics, I would probably try to find a statistics textbook and have my child complete that. For art, you could use picture study, but also count any time that your child does any kind of art project or visits to art exhibits.
Misty, do you HAVE to follow guidelines from your state? Does your state “issue” any diploma? Are you considered a private school? IF so do you have to follow the guidelines for private schools? I don’t pay ANY attention to my state standard requirements. Has nothing to do with me. I’m not the state, my kids aren’t educated by the state. Just one thought.
Another one–does it have to be JUST art, or is it a fine arts? I gave my kids a half credit for accumulated picture study and composer study and other various things we do (reading about or watching a video about artists or music, etc.)
I have NO idea what statistics and probability they mean for high school. I know exactly what that means for college–and I had to have calculus first. Perhaps look into The Teaching Company–they have video courses for both, and the math in the probability one is Algebra II level. But the statistics one is calculus-based[—all statistics is. They can’t really mean they want them to take real statistics! LOL Not everyone anyway, since most high school kids don’t even take calculus. You’d need to find detailed topics required. If they just mean the cheesy “probability” sections in most public-school math texts–those are dumb. And don’t cover much.
Oh, and language arts is just what you do each year–literature, discussion, writing, grammar, spelling, speech/public speaking. Shakespeare. Watch a movie of a Shakespeare play or classic book? Count it. Count the time you spend on all the above activities, narration, etc. I just use the Organizer to keep a weekly tally of what I do and roughly how much time I spend.
I don’t know Michelle. I just looked up requirements and this is what I found. No they do not from my knowledge do anything I make a diploma and it’s from me. So I guess it’s up to me.
I guess back to researching … I’ll be back.. Misty
