I’m trying to decide on an American History for my high schooler. The curriculum guide shows Stories of America for history. The age range on the book says 1st-6th grade. Is this what you would use for a high schooler along with the other recommended books? Or do you have a suggestion for a good American History spine? I want history to be interesting not dull & dry facts.
Thanks for your help!
Susan
Sonya ShaferModeratorSusan, we recommend Stories of America if you are reading the book to the whole family. If you’re looking for a spine just for your high schooler, I would recommend America: The Last Best Hope by William Bennett, all three volumes.
marmiemamaParticipantWe love, love, love the Stories of America/Nations series! I read them aloud to my 5th, 6th, and 9th graders. 11th grader listens in, too sometimes. Love the way they are written. Wish SCM would make similar books for the earlier modules. hint, hint, hint, Sonya!
AnonymousInactiveSo Sonya, if you are actually covering history chronologically with a highschooler, in addition to using America: The Last Best Hope, what would you recommend for world history coverage to use instead of the Stories of the Nations? And would you need to buy the guides?
Sonya ShaferModeratorI haven’t found a good narrative for world history, so I would recommend using those books just as outlined on the book lists, incuding Stories of the Nations. It’s up to you if you want the lesson plans or just want to work your way through the book lists on your own schedule and pace.
@marmiemama, Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors is available for that time period. We don’t have plans to try to write our own books for Ancient Greece and Rome, because there are other really good books already available for those time periods.
AnonymousInactiveOkay. Thanks Sonya!
Rachel WhiteParticipantMrs. K. Some other options for world history could be Will Durant’s The Story of Civilization world history series (which can be bought individually): http://www.amazon.com/The-Story-Civilization-Volume-Set/dp/1567310230
or Susan Bauer’s new Ancient and Middle Ages History books (Renaissance forthcoming). They are said to be for ages 12+; they are very thick, so I would assume they are suitable for HS and adults.
Truthquest history for HS is also an option, Level II, with books for HS level:

AnonymousInactiveRachel,
I’m so sorry – for some reason I did not see your comment until now. Thanks for the suggestions! I actually have one of the TruthQuest guides but didn’t really care for it. I will check out Susan Bauer’s book and Durant’s book you suggested. Again, thanks for the suggestions! 🙂
Rachel WhiteParticipantI just noticed your original question was concerning Am. History. ONes that Sonya has recommended in the past were William Bennett’s America: Last Best Hope series in Three Volumes; plus one with later events into the 21st cen.
VOL. 1 – http://www.amazon.com/America-Last-Volume-Discovery-World/dp/B0031MA8O2/ref=pd_cp_b_1
Vol. 2 – http://www.amazon.com/America-Volume-World-Triumph-Freedom/dp/1595550879/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_y
Vol.. 3 – http://www.amazon.com/America-Volume-Collapse-Communism-Radical/dp/1595554289/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_z
A Century Turns – http://www.amazon.com/Century-Turns-New-Hopes-Fears/dp/B003WUYSQC/ref=pd_sim_b_11
And the other respected historican would be Paul Johnson’s American His. books:
A History of the American People – http://www.amazon.com/History-American-People-Paul-Johnson/dp/0060930349/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1378935940&sr=1-1&keywords=paul+johnson+a+history+of+the+american+people
and/or
Modern Times: The World from the Twenties to the Nineties, Revised Edition
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0060922834/$%7B0%7D#reader_0060922834
and then there are afew personal suggestions on Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson by Judge Napolitano and others w/an alternative perspective on the New Deal and a much overlooked Coolidge.
AnonymousInactiveNo problem Rachel! 🙂 I am also actually considering sources for world history too for next year. So I appreciate you making the suggestions for world history. 🙂 As I mentioned, I’ll check out the Bauer and Durant books.
And wow – thanks for all the links on the American history! Since my original post, I actually found a text for American history that we have that is very well written that covers up to around the 1990s. So I’ll just need to find resources to cover 1990s to present. I’ll be looking at some of the suggestions you made.
Thanks again! 🙂
Rachel WhiteParticipantYou’re welcome! My pleasure; I LOVE history!
AnonymousInactiveOops! Rachel, I DID ask about world history originally! LOL It was the original poster that asked about American history. I must have confused this thread with another one on American history. Sorry about that! I’ve already checked out some of the links you gave. Thank you!
