Hermit crab excitement

  • So we got four hermit crabs a couple of days ago. I did a lot of research and set up their ‘crabitat’ as perfectly as possible. Of course, the one little one did not come out of its shell at the store and I should have not chosen it. In hindsight…well, anyway, this morning it was dead.

So we run all the way back to Madison, which is an hour away, just to replace it and get a couple more. We HAD planned on school today, but somehow the dead crab completely changed our day.

The exciting part is that one of the new crabs we brought home was obviously in need of a new shell, of which we had none. He was going to the other crabs and flipping them over trying to find an empty shell. So my dh and I head to Wal-Mart craft section and buy a bag of shells. We put them in the tank and at this point the pesky fellow was calmed down. We watched and waited. He was on the move again and YES!!! He started nosing about the new shells. I called the kids who weren’t already there watching and sure enough, we all got to see him change shells. It was SO cool! My kids were so thrilled! Of course, my dh didn’t make it in time and was late by about 2 and a half second. I felt bad he missed it.

We may not got a lick of school done today, but between the crab and the fun they’re having outside with all of the non-crab usable shells, it’s been a good day.

How fun! Have you read Pagoo by Holling C. Holling? It is a great book about the life cycle of a hermit crab. He doesn’t die at the end. 🙂

We have hermit crabs.  They have changed shells, but always return to their original!  What’s up with that?  One died.  It was sad.  🙁

I did not know Pagoo was about a hermit crab.  Thank you for sharing.  Now, when can I fit that in?   Science and nature study??? 🙂

Pleasure reading! We read it as a read aloud for bedtime stories. There are some cliffhanger chapters, so be prepared to read more…

We have hermit crabs as well…I think we still have three (I haven’t seen a couple of them in months, but I’m assuming they are molting).  I love watching them change shells!  …And when they eat with their cute little pinchers!

We read Pagoo last year…my older two really enjoyed it!

My older boys read Pagoo when we were still doing Ambleside. It’s been quite a long time, though, so I’m going to do it as a family read-aloud and let the littles in on it this time.
