I am wondering if there is a specific reason why only the Numbers and Exodus books are recommended in the Curriculum Guide and not the entire set of Genesis-Dueteronomy for this series? I would assume children would benefit from having this type of commentary for each of the OT books we are working through. I would also love to hear any first hand experiences with these books (I have a 11 and 7 yr old).
They are Great commentaries! I learned so much from them. In module 1, Exodus and Numbers are covered more in depth. Also, the chapters are long so IMO it would be too much to try and add it in.
Hi there. I think I am in the minority here, and I apologize if I offend, I appreciate the work that SCM does in choosing resources, but I am afraid the Nancy Gantz commentaries did not go well with my family. The style of writing was not at fault, children can follow it, but it was the content.
I found myself questioning a lot of what was written, and when my oldest child did too, I discussed it with my husband and showed it to him, and we decided to stop reading it. I felt it added unnecessarily to scripture, which in my humble opinion is already clear and perfect. I was not always sure of the accuracy of what Nancy added, but felt I could trust the Word.
Our family has always taught directly from scripture, so after a few lessons, I reverted back to our usual way of studying scripture, referring to Matthew Henry’s Commentary when needed. This was not easy (as anyone who know the old Matthew Henry book will know) but I felt at peace about it. And I didn’t feel we missed anything.
Fortunately I purchased the Ganz commentaries in ebook format, at CBD, so it was not too expensive.
Perhaps you could purchase one like that to try, and see how your family likes it. It may work for your family.
Regards,
Lindy
