My son is 6.5 and we are entering our first real school year this year, but he is struggling with wanting to go to school like the other kids in our neighborhood. He becomes quite upset, and I am not sure how to encourage him. Any advice?

If you can find other homeschoolers and plan things with them, that may help. I have an 11 yo who doesn’t complain about not being in school, but does want to be with other kids. So, having that resource would help. Plan sme fun field trips. things he wouldn’t get to do if he was in school. I keep reminding my daughter that if she was in school, she would be sitting and doing bookwork (maybe not in the beginning which is your case), but at home we don’t have to sit and just work in books. Basically, let your child know what you will be doing to spark his interest. HTH

Get out an about, beach, forest etc. during the day while the kids are in school.  We also go afterschool lets out to play in the playground so the kids can run around with the other kids.  See if you can join the local school for sports day, concerts etc. (our local school is great for this and we go for all the “special” events.)  My almost 6 year old also asks (although all his older siblings are homeschooled), after trying to reason with him I realized that he just wanted to be with the other kids so now I just say “nope, that’s not how we do things” and he gets over it.
