Helping a child with S.A.D. (Seasonal Affect Disorder) & Learning disabilities

    Hello,

    I am wondering if anyone has ideas to that may help me to help my son love learning.  We’ve recently figured out (after years of struggle) that he has fairly severe Seasonal Affect Disorder.  We’re working with a natural doctor who is helping us get some nutritional deficiencies evened out (very low iron & low vitamin D – even though it is the middle of summer!) as well as another supplement.  What we’re finding though after lengthy conversations lately is that he feels SO bad during the fall/winter/early spring (basically the entire school year) – that it is affecting his whole view of school.  He suffers depression, feeling the desire to curl up in bed and ‘hibernate’, attention issues, irritability….and because he generally feels these things throughout the school year he has started associating school with these things.   (He also has a significant learning disability in math – we’re still figuring that one out, but praying we can find a good place for testing soon).  I am determined to help him overcome these this year and I do think that the supplements will help, but I am at a loss for how to convince him to have a more hopeful attitude towards his work this year.  I am open to any suggestions & advice.  I should mention that we live in western WA, near the mountains, so escaping the endless rain & darkness is really difficult to do.

    Does he use a light therapy box? I have the Suntouch Plus by Nature Bright.  It is good for one year. I use it year round,  but increase the time in the winter.  I don’t use the ozone feature.

    For curriculum,  narrow it down to two or three,  show him samples,  and get his opinions.  Give him as many choices as possible, including time of day to do work,  location,  etc.  One of my son’s liked to do his work outside. He did 5 math lessons on Monday sometimes to get it over for the week, Tuesday English,  etc.

    Potatoes not Prozac or Little Sugar Addicts by, Kathleen Des Maison should be helpful.

    We don’t have a light therapy box, but I’ve thought about it (for me as well, since I am also affected by the lack of daylight).  I wasn’t sure which brand(s) would be best.  Thank you for all of your suggestions – so helpful!
