hello. I am new to this forum, but not new to CM. I have been searching high and low for Nikola Tesla living books. I am wanting to start looking into inventors and their inventions as a fun science series except, I cannot find any biographies on the fellow. It would be such a life saver if anyone knew of any way to point me. Thank you so much.

PBS has an article on their website from a couple of years ago about Tesla, and they interviewed two authors of books about him.  The books are linked to their Amazon pages, but maybe you can find them in your local library or through interlibrary loan.

Here is the link to the PBS article:  http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/5-things-you-didnt-know-about-nikola-tesla/

Go to Amazon and in the search bar type biography Tesla.  You’ll get several results. 🙂

There is a series on Netflex called American Genius and they have an episode on Tesla and Edison. It’s a very well done series!!!

A bio called Westinghouse, from 2008, contains very valuable information about him and his partnership with Tesla, contrasting with Edison-very much recommended; we found it at the library

It’s available for free if you have Amazon Prime!

I don’t know your children’s ages but I found these in one of my book-lists books; they are recommended for grades 10-12:

    Empires of LIght– Jill Jonnes

Tesla: Man Out of Time – Margeret Cheney

Not sure what age children you need the book for but we read – Electrical Wizard: How Nikola Tesla Lit Up the World.  We were doing a unit on the Chicago World’s Fair.  There is a really good documentary called White Expo (free I think on prime streaming at Amazon) about the Chicago World’s Fair.  It would sure go nicely with a study on inventions.  It is incredible what all was built just to house the fair (it covered 600 acres) and all of the inventions that were displayed for the fair.  Also, we learned about the Ferris Wheel.  It was amazing and luxurious.  The compartments were carpeted, if you can imagine.  It is a fun invention to read about!

Here are the books we did:

The Fair and Chicago were are central themes so we did some books that wouldn’t go with an inventions unit.

Another fun book that you might like is: Ben Franklin’s Big Splash by Barb Rosenstock.  It is about his invention of swimming fins.  It is a picture book but I can’t imagine any age not getting a kick (no pun intended) out of reading it.

    HTH,

    Linda
