This is my first time doing CM and using a SCM guide. We are around lesson 35. I have a few questions.
First, I and my children are really struggling to get through A Traveler in Rome. My children are 5 and 8. My 8 year old daughter usually loves ALL books, especially when they are read aloud. Neither of us get much out of the book though. I really struggle with the pronunciation on many words and I feel like we are just “getting through it”. Is there anything anyone would sugest that we could replace it with? It is a very unique book so it may be hard to find something else similar, but what are others using if not this?
Secondly, I was unable to find Growing up in Ancient Rome and started the year without anything to take it’s place. Now I feel like we are really missing out on learning about the lifestyle. Are there any suggestions for books that could take the place for this one? I am hoping I could find it at our library.
I would love to hear what others do, especially for this Module. Any advice or suggestions would be really helpful.
I can’t speak to the first part because I did ancient stuff before we started SCM.
For your second question – we used, and liked, Usborne’s Time Traveler book for learning about ‘growing up in ancient Rome’. Along with Detectives in Togas and Mystery of the Roman Ransom I felt like we covered it fairly well. My boys were 6 at the time.
