Could someone more knowledgeable than I please tell me the time line for periods in history.  What I mean is like US History covers from X to Y.  I would like to know so I can better decide on a module.  Please list for: US History, World History, Ancient History, and any others.

I am needing this for a student I am planning to use the guides for their high school history/social studies credits.  They will need the US and one more.  They already have done an Economics study and I wan them to do the government alongside the US.

Thanks.. shows my weekness in homeschooling and it all falls in history and grammar but we wont talk about grammarWink Misty

Oh and if you so wanted to spare me and know also – which module goes with which time period I would be so very grateful. Laughing

Go to this page – http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/curriculum-guide/

Click 2nd option – Step by Step Guide – and it will show you what years each module covers.

Are you asking about the timelines for each module, or timelines to go alongside?  Timelines are included in the sidebar of each module guide.  But, if you are looking for detailed timelines for each period to use with each module, you may find some at various websites.  Some are broad, with only general, important events.  Others are fairly detailed.  Here’s a sample list of useful timelines for the US history credit.  HTH

missceegee – that was helpful.  Ok so I’m slow and this subject is really, well it makes me feel icky.  I would need to know what years go with what people call US history, etc.

Also, with high school history, can you say just pick like Ancient Rome and do that study and then their you have one credit in Ancient Rome to write on your transcripts?  You don’t have to cover all the different “ancient” periods correct?

So is module 6 Modern times what I would buy for US History?  What would I use for World History?

Misty – Module 5 covers the historical period known as Early Modern and covers both American and World history covering the years 1550 to 1850. The Modern Times module covers both American and World history and covers the years 1850-2012.

Module 5 and Module 6 both cover American and World History side by side. From what I remember, you are doing world history twice a week (say M and W) and American History twice a week (say T and TH) and geography once a week (say F).

If you will do both Modules, then you would count it as 1 credit for American History and 1 credit for World History. (Each year covers 1/2 credit of each).

Here is a link to the Early Modern Module 5 booklists:

Here is a link to the Modern Times Module 6 booklist:

    Does that help?

I think Sheraz you might have just made me do a backflip!  So if my son does Module 5 & 6 then he get’s 2 credits.  So he would do one module 1 year and 1 module the 2nd year!  I think that is totally do able and then he gets 2 credits. Plus his 1/2 from Economics and he’ll get something for governement… a done deal!

Misty, I would not count the credits like that. I don’t have time now, but I would suggest reading up a bit on what constitutes a full credit. I know Sonya has included that info in the backs of the newly revised guides. Module 1 – 1/2 credit for history/geo and 1/2 credit bible. Each is a bit different.

@Misty, I’m pretty sure that is what Sonya has said in the recent past about the revised Module 5 and 6. BTW – 3.5 hours per week for 36 weeks give you 126 hours for a credit. 😉

@Missceegee – Are you refering to Module 1 (Ancient Egypt) for 1/2 credit for history/geography or Module 5 gets 1/2 credit for world and American combined?

It was my understanding from reading past threads that Sonya has said that she figured 1/2 credit for American and 1/2 credit for world history for the revised Module 5 and 1/2 credit for American and 1/2 credit for World for the revised Module 6; thus making 1 credit for American history and 1 credit for World history if you do BOTH modules. If I have mis-read those posts, I’d like to see what she said so I am not making mistakes on the forum. 😉 So if you still don’t consider the work enough, what else are you adding? I’m not trying to be offensive, I really am curious…

Okay – I went on a hunt for a thread with a response from Sonya about the revised editions…I found one. She said:

“Calculating credits is a subjective thing sometimes, but here is how my mind views the modules.

Modules 1-3: If you are considering the Bible history as “Bible” and not world history, then I think you would need all three modules to equal 1 history credit. Reading Ancient Egypt only one day per week will not give enough hours for a credit just in one year. If, however, you are counting the Bible history readings toward your history credit, then you would have enough to award 1 credit per year possibly.

Modules 4-6: Since students read world history four days per week, I do count these modules as 1 history credit per year. If you divide up American History and World History on your transcript, however, keep in mind that Module 5 is only half of each, and the revised Module 6 (coming very soon!) will be only half of each. So if you do both Modules 5 and 6, you will have 1 credit of American History and 1 credit of World History. (And if you add the American Government course we recommend, you will have 1 credit of that as well.)

    Clear as mud?“

    (For reference:   http://simplycharlottemason.com/scmforum/topic/new-high-school-spine-for-module-6  Sonya’s 3rd post)

I think that state and college requirements vary a bit, so knowing those that affect each of us personally would be helpful.

For example, I have seen more than one thread on this forum announcing that credit hours should be 150-180 work hours per year to count as 1 credit….other threads proclaim that 120-150 hours is the absolute requirement. However, when I check our state requirements, it says that 100 hours are required to be counted as 1 credit. (And yes, I know that one needs to check the colleges of preference and see what they require!)

So it actually does vary a bit – which should be a relief to any number of us here, LOL

Sheraz, my note was about module 1 specifically, but I was getting at what you just shared. One needs to look at both state and college requirements and time spent on the studies. Well said.

Thanks, Christie. Thanks for pointing out that figuring out credits for each Module will be different…that is why I thought I better clarify that I was speaking about the revised Mod 5-6. I was a little alarmed at first reading your post and thinking that I had said the wrong thing about Mod. 5 and 6. Whew… =)

So i don’t see anything on the organizer book/curriculm list for government.  Do they not have any suggestions personally  here?  I will search old files I know there have been talks.
