Help with Beginning Narration

We have started basic narration with our 6 year old.  We read a few pages and then have him tell us what he remembers.  He can only remember one or two things.  We were not asking him questions to prompt him.  But tonight I did because I was frustrated.  And he answered every question I ask him.  So he is listening and new what was going on but could not recall the events without being prompted.  I know I should not be prompting him so what should I do?  Please help.
