I have an 8 year old ds who is incredibly bored after being stuck in the house all winter.  He is constantly asking what he can do and I honestly don’t have many suggestions for him.  It seems as if many of the handicraft suggestions for boys would require adult assistance in someway.  Does anyone have any ideas of different worthwhile things he could spend his time doing?

My 9yo son love science experiments, but I don’t have much patience with them:)  We’ve got a few books around the house, though, that have simple experiments/recipes he can do himself.  Also, Sonlight sells Discover and Do Dvd’s that have a fun guy showing experiments with things around the house and my son will sometimes go and do them on his own.

My son also enjoys puzzles, The Dangerous Book for Boys, Science Activity/Brain Teaser Books (I found some cheap at Half Price Books…actually found the Dangerous book there, too…), Legos, Wii Just Dance for some exercise.  http://www.keepersofthefaith.com (I think that’s it) has handicraft kits…though I’m not sure how many are independent for an 8yo.  My son has also enjoyed many scienc-y activity kits from Hobby Lobby…though that can get costly (I always search for a 40% off coupon:)  HTH some…though if he’s not into science I might not be very helpful!    :)Gina

My 8yo ds has loved soap carving.  I bought a book on amazon that showed you how to make tools out of tounge depressors (so they don’t have to start with a knife).  The book teaches you how to do it.  I did have to spend some time up front teaching him but then he took it and ran with it.  Now he is working on a weaving loom – making pot holders and he really is enjoying that.  My 6yo is doing fingerprint art – Ed Emberley’s book and $!.00 ink pads from Micheals – he LOVES it!!!.

My son love love loves tinker toys and legos.

    Hope that helps

We just bought our 8yo the American Boys’ Handy Book by Daniel Beard. It is full of boy-ish stuff, like potato cannons, traps for birds and rodents, kite-making, various fishing apparatuses, and more. He has only had it for a few days and is reading it every night before bed. He and Daddy made a kite on Sunday afternoon.

We also have several Melissa & Doug stamp kits. He has one with dinosaurs and horses and enjoys both on a lazy afternoon. I mentioned Playmobil toys on another thread. My ds also likes to carve soap with his Swiss Army pocket knife. We have a small tent that can be set up in the house for hours of pretend camping/pretend disaster survival. For some reason my children love to gather stuffed animals, blankets, and pillows and pretend to survive through tornados, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. Too many episodes of Raging Planet, perhaps??

We also have an empty room with wood floors that doubles as a play room/family play space. We love to turn music up really loud and have dance parties.

Just some ideas to get you started,

    Lindsey
