My dd definitely has a disability in math, gets confused easily with the ‘order’ and consistency of it. She is in CLE level 4 and 15. She has to put all her concentration into remembering the order she should do the problems to get the solution.
She’s adopted and her birth mother drank, did meth, and smoked cigs -was 15 at the time- while pregnant plus, my dd was neglected and malnourished before us (she was 20lbs. At 2 yrs old).
I’m trying to decide what to do this next semester, pre-chem using Friendly Chem., basically the first half of physical science. Or I could wait till next year and put her in either course mentioned above.
I don’t know which I would do. BUT, have you given her helps to use during math? I’m thinking – an actual list that tells her what order to do math problems, laminated or on an index card.
That’s in process now, Tristan. Just haven’t gotten it finished.
If it is sequential and always follows the same rule or pattern, she struggles. She always changed things. Even putting dishes away! We’ll have gone over that these things go this way and she won’t repeat it when the time comes to do it next time.
I have no advice on what Math you should do with her, but just thought I would share that I was the exact same way with Math. I have to understand the big picture before I can understand the parts. I think it’s called visual spacial learning. I also could be taught how to work an algebra problem if I knew the steps to take, but once the type of problem changed and the steps changed, I didn’t know what steps to follow. I couldn’t work several types of problems in a review section and know what to do. It was challenging to say the least. I had a few tutors, but it was challenging!!! I was raised on Abeka math all through elementary school and it was spiral which made me feel like things jumped around too much!!! I have wondered if I had a different and really solid math foundation, would I have fewer challenges with it? Who knows, but it is so frustrating for the student and the teacher as well. My oldest son seems to be a little like me (3rd grade) but I won’t know until I get to Algebra. I was never great at math but I understood it until algebra. Algebra blew my mind!!! And, I also dreaded science that required algebra in particular.
