There is a series of books called the Discovering Canada Series and they have a title that we used about the First Nations. I can’t remember the exact name right now but it is something simple and straightforward like, “native peoples” or something like that. They are not big books, and they are not exactly living books but they are good in that the lessons can be easily broken down to small chunks, they have interesting and well done drawings throughout and hands on projects throughout the entire book in order to get a better idea of how they lived, what they ate, etc. I had a hard time finding truly living books about the Canadian First Nations. This book covered all areas of Canada from coast to coast, though. I was able to find a few more living books to supplement this book that are more on specific tribes and we used those when possible. We learned and retained information on native peoples using this book throughout last year. This year we are using another book in the same series about Vikings. We are liking it too, so far.
