I wanted to add that I have the Fighter Verses iOS app and it is a wonderful tool. It comes preloaded with all of the Foundation verses (with pictures), fighter verses, and extended memory verses. You can also add your own. I love it. It allows you to read, listen, sometimes hear it sung, read in context, connect to commentary, quiz and more all in a very simple to understand app. If I could organize verses like I do in our SMS boxes, it would likely be our only tool. As it is, it’s a great learning help.

I added some tabs in the back of my box for my 2 year old that are done by seasons “Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter”. She has been working on Philippians 4:13 all summer. It is so cute to hear her say, “I can do…”

My 4 year old moves through the box the regular way, but the 2 year old just does her one “Summer” verse each day. I think by the end of the summer she’ll have the one verse memorized.

That’s what works for us. HTH! 🙂

Also I read a couple people mention ANKI. what is this?

ANKI is a free flashcard program that you can download to your computer.  (There is also an android version and an online version – so you can use it pretty much anywhere…  there is an ipad version as well, but that version is expensive.)

But – it is much more than a “flashcard” system – it is a “Spaced Repetition System” or SRS.  That means that it uses an algorithm to determine when you are likely to forget a card, and then shows it to you again just before that time.  It is working great!  I have a profile for each child because we use it for a lot of things – but if you just did Scripture Memory, you might be able to just have a card deck for each child instead…

For scriptures, you need to change the default options for the deck.  While putting the cards we already knew into the system, I set it up to show 1 “new” card a day.  The cards we didn’t know I “suspended” when I added them.  When a child has learned his “new” card – I go into the browser and unsuspend the next one I want him to know.  (Anki is designed a bit more for little pieces of knowledge – mostly language translation so one side might say “chien” and the other side says “dog”…. so the default is to give you 20 new cards a day!  definitely not what we want for scriptures!  By suspending all unlearned cards until ready for a new one I keep learning it possible!

We are using ANKI for a number of things – including ones not quite invisioned by the author.  We use it for our AAS cards, to recommend a practice sheet for RS math, to recommend games for RS math, and I’m just adding in items for our violin practices.   I do think I’m going to need to think of new settings for the RS math stuff though, as it is a use that ANKI really isn’t designed for, and once summer is over it will be giving us way too much to work with…  or more like, as we only do 1 practice sheet a day, and the number of games will probably be 1 a day most days – it just won’t move fast enough to keep us into the current math with the lesson….

ANKI is very powerful – but it isn’t the most user friendly.  I don’t think it is too hard, but it can take a bit of tinkering to get the settings just right.

google ANKI SRS to find it.
