I have a granddaughter(8yo) who is a public school student. She is a very reluctant free reader. I am hoping to find a book to gift her for Christmas that will open her eyes to the joy of reading. I had hoped to tempt her with a well illustrated copy of The Chronicles of Narnia (or at least The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) but I cannot find an original unabridged text with color illustrations. I think a book with beautiful illustrations will draw her in, while a well written story will capture her interest. She is very sensitive to anything she would perceive as childish. ?

So, my question to you all is…what other books would you suggest for this young lady?

My 8yo (9 in Jan.) LOVES the Wayside School Stories. They are silly, silly, silly. That same daughter is also loving A Lion to Guard Us by Bulla.

Maybe you could buy a beautiful classic along with the audio book to accompany it – just in case her reading hasn’t quite progressed to that point yet.  (In my opinion, the Narnia books are too difficult for an average 8YO.)

I can’t recommend a specific edition, though.  It isn’t easy to tell on Amazon whether a specific edition is the unabridged edition or not.

I was going to say the same thing as Jawgee about an audio book. Perhaps a lovely copy of The Secret Garden, maybe the Tasha Tudor edition, with an audio to help her through the dialect. The language is beautiful and the transformation Mary Lennox goes through makes it, to my mind, not “babyish.” It does have some intense themes, though, mainly dealing with death, so maybe that would be too much?

Thank you all for the suggestions. I like the audio addition to the text, it may help her. I do want to find a good classic story. I have considered The Secret Garden, I am also considering A Little Princess.

It makes makes me so sad to think of a child who doesn’t enjoy reading and who is missing so many great stories.

My ds8 is also a reluctant reader.  While decorating for Christmas, we just found my old, basic kindle and he loves it.  I have the Beatrix Potter collection on there…short stories and b&w pictures.  There are free early readers you can add on to it as well.  Just a thought.
