I’m trying to decide what to do – I have Spelling Wisdom book 1. My eldest (11 yo, 6th) is probably dyslexic and not a visual learner. He’s done a bit (#1-10) of dictation with SW before, as well as other programs, and is catching on pretty fast. However, language continues to be a big concern with him and something we need to focus on. He seems to be okay with longer words, but he can’t do longer sections (more words). He is fairly asynchronous in his abilities right now.
My second son (10 yo, 4th) did a few selections from a different dictation program last term, but I think it is too simple for him. He is pretty natural in the language areas. For example they do Latin & Spanish together – 11yo struggles to recall flashcards while 10yo sails through. (They review separately with ANKI.)
We do AO, so in their main books they are separate.
So … Should I combine them? Should I place the younger ahead of the older, or let the older get further ahead then start the younger at #1. Or I could put the younger in a different program (I have Simply Spelling). Can I bump the eldest to SW level 2 (which should start with shorter selections).
I had a somewhat similar issue with two of my kids and chose to keep them separated, placing my 9 yr old in the first half of SW book one and the 11 yr old in the second half. I think that it would have been demotivating for my older child to put them exactly at the same level.
Our 4 yo and our 7 yo are almost at the same reading level, and I am having them do two different readers. They are both doing Delightful Reading (which I love BTW) and I purposely started my 4 yo a few months after my 7 yo, eventhough my 4 yo probably could have started sooner.
That is just what works for us – HTH in some way.
