Ok ladies, I really need your help.  have been asked to teach a World History class at our co-op next year. I need something for 6th-8th grade, Christian perspective, easily completed independent. I will have 1 hour a week with the kids, then I am to send them home with 2-3 assignemtns to complete at home. This should be enough to be considered their full history course for the year (no need for mom to teach another one at home). Since I don’t know how each parent teaches, I am looking for something that can be done fairly indpendent once I teach the main lesson. I would like to be able to add in a few good literature books to go along. I had planned on using the SCM guides for my girls but I’m just not sure how I could make this work at the co-op. so what are your ideas?

    BJU World Studies might work.

I don’t have enough time to check a couple of my favorite places for suggestions right now, but I think I may have some and will be back. 🙂

I wonder if you could still sort of tweak the SCM history guide suggestionsand make it work – assign various reading from the independent reading lists and give prompts for written narrations, and then you could then discuss the readings, or assign the students to do presentations on a historical character from the time period, do map and timeline work, perhaps some readings from “spine” sort of book for your together times each week?  Just a thought.  Even if the other families don’t do CM type schooling in their homes, I’m sure you could still take a living books approach. =)

Jen, that would be great if I could do that. I am just not sure it would be worth all the extra work I would have to put into it. I would have to pull together a few modules and other ideas. They want this to be an overall world History or Ancient History course. Possibly from creation to Christ. Thanks for the thoughts though.

BlueJ, I look forward to hearing your ideas as I am drawing a blank.

I have looked at BJU I just hate textbooks so much I know know if I could stand a year of this.

    I agree about BJU.  I wish I had a better suggestion  🙁

Well, I know that the Mystery of History covers Creation to Christ in the first volume.

Now, it’s not CM friendly, but it is World History and you could tweak it a much as you wanted.  Our hs group used it this last year with success and plan to do volume 2 next year.  Our kids did not join in because we had already used it and we started the Module 5 from SCM.  I could find out how the group of kids liked it, if that would help.

The mom that led that class has a CM background but is pretty eclectic now, but still believes in the CM method and actually borrowed my book.  I didn’t sell it because I thought it might prove useful in our future, so we’ll see.

Best wishes as you make your choice and please let us know what you end up with…some of us may need to ‘borrow’ your ideas:)

Here is what I found through Rainbow Resource.  I have seen this entry before either when I was looking online or in the catalog itself (don’t remember which) but not seen the actual manual that goes with it.  I have also flipped through Streams of Civilization, which it uses for a text, but have never used it.  Still, this might help you feel more comfortable in working with a group.

Would the Greenleaf Guide to Old Testament be a help to you.  If you study creation through Jesus, this should give you a large part of what you would need. 🙂

I need to keep poking around my bookmarks since neither of these are the resource that I am thinking of (and I can’t tell you because I can’t remember the name of it or the page where if found the information… sigh).

Bluej the first one sounds great. I wish there were more samples to view. I was actually just looking over The Streams of Civilizations on Donna Young’s site. she has a schedule posted to add in living books that might work for me. I hadn’t really thought about the Greenleaf guides I will have to look them over. I actually have the one for Egypt on my shelf. Thanks for the thoughts.

If you had to cover all of world history in one year, I would either use Child’s History of the World and beef it up or Gombrich’s History of the World.  I’m doing Notgrass’ Exploring World History with my 10th grader this year but that may not work for a co-op.

The thing with CHOW is that it is online and the kids could do the readings on their own.  I do love how Mystery of History incorporates the Biblical events alongside or interspersed with the world events.  I don’t know of any other book that does that for the time period.

    Your class sounds fun!

    Blessings, Betty

Wanted to update you ladies. I think at this point I am trying to decide between Ancient Civilizations and the Bible by Diana Waring and Adam to Messiah by Heart of Wisdom. Anyone have any thoughts on these two?

I have used and loved Diana Waring stuff and her materials are great. My only caution would be if you only have an hour a week with the whole group, you might not have time to incorporate any of the activities she suggests in her books. An hour goes by pretty quick especially if you have to review and talk about the stuff they did at home. Heart of Wisdom is similar but their reading selections are bigger. I have used both and they are both great!
