My oldest has just started 7th this year and I am such a planner I am trying to figure out high school. I am having a hard time with the idea of sending off to study alone while I spend the day with my youngers. We have always done everything together with the exception of grade level math and LA. We have mostly used My Fathers World with many tweaks.  I dont love it, but the history is light enough to leave room for lots of extra reading. Next year, 8th, I am planning to use Beautiful Feets Early American Intermediate with extra books for him to read independently. But then HS, I am lost. He is NOT a reader, though I have tried desperately to turn him into one. I am hinking of using the SCM guides, but there are 6 and I need a 4 year cycle, or leave some out, or double up. But is that doable for a reluctant reader? I LOVE how Bible is central in the first few guides so skipping some doesnt really sit well with me. In Calif we need one World and one American history credit so the last two would be my only required credits I think. So all that to get to my question, does the following plan seem doable?

    9th grade Module 1 and 2

    10th grade Module 3 and 4

    11th grade Module 5

    12th grade Module 6

I was going to add in the Seven Sisters writing and literature guides as well for English credits.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

    thanks,

    Crystal

My oldest is the same age and does not read a lot on his own yet.  Sometimes he will get caught up in a fiction story, but mostly he likes non-fiction books.  I am reading aloud to him at bedtime as our time alone to bond, and also for teaching morals, values, and hopefully an appreciation for literature.

You can do modules 1-3 in one year, doing Bible as a separate, daily subject, and History/Geography as a separate subject.  Or use Beautiful Feet or something else for one year of Ancients.  Modules 5 & 6 are each a half credit for each World and American Histories.

You could start assigning some reading to him alone now and gradually build it up to be more and assign written or oral narrations.  This can be something extra than MFW like business or government or logic, etc.  I found the Self Propelled Advantage by Joanne Calderwood helpful to get my son more independent.

You could also encourage reading in free time with a rewards program.  Maybe start reading the first one or two chapters and let him finish.
