I know this sounds silly, as I know what to do with him, it’s just I’ve gotten rid of the stuff that I used when my son was that age! I have 2, 9 yr. olds and my 21 mth. old grandson is finally going to be babysat by us. I tossed out or gave a away all the wonderful things my son played with then- all I have left are a couple of puzzles and some large lacing letters and a ride-it horsey thing. I have music for him to dance to. My son has some old wooden trains he can use (just gotta watch the mouth thing) and maybe my dd has some play dough? We have a decent size letter magnets and a board and chalk, but no large crayons for scribbling. Nothing to ride on; he can swing in my son’s lap and slide down the slide. Part of me doesn’t remember that age and I know my son was engaged in play activities much more so than my gs is, no electronics, lots of outdoors and very little tv and he listened to stories, I really didn’t entertain him at all, but I can tell that he’s used to that; it’s not a good situation domesticly either. It’s bad when your dd-in-law wants to have something to do with you but your own son, gr/son Benjamin’s dad, doesn’t.

He’s used to being very stimulated by modern toys/tv everywhere else he stays and I’m not going to do that. We gave him his wooden blocks the other day when they were visiting and he didn’t know what to do with them.

Could ya’ll give me some ideas please for stuff I may already have around the house? I don’t know if we’ll be heading to walmart for large crayons and manual things like that.

pots and pans with a couple wooden spoons to beat on them

bowls and cups to pour water into (best done outside)

make a “tent” for him…like a blanket over the coffee table or 2 chairs

a bucket with things to dump out and put back in (even if its just full of measuring cups, spoons, etc)

just a few ideas. Hope that helps. Have fun! 🙂

Could your dd-in-law leave a stroller so you could take him on a walk? Is there a park near-the “baby” swings are perfect for that age.

Digging in the dirt with little garden shovels or even old spoons is always a hit.

Looking for small bugs (roly polys, grasshoppers, ants)

Pots and pans and tubberware are always great. You can bang them, cook in them or stack them.

If you supervised, he could always color with a pen or pencil.

    Like the tent idea.

Have any match box type cars? You can always drive them in beans, rice, sand or dirt, making roadways as you go.

Have any pudding? You could pudding “paint” on a plate (like fingerpainting). If he ate some, it wouldn’t be a worry : ).

    HTH!
