My Husband and I have recently been talking passionately about Homeschooling out two children. Our Daughter is 9, (4th Grade) and our Son is 5 (Kindergarten). We have discussed it in years past when our daughter began 1st grade due to school environment, lack of communication in the school (the fact that there was no PTA showed the lack of parental involvement), and just the way teaching is done these days period. Unfortunately we were not financially at a place where I could stop working to do it. Fast forward 5 years, and we are at a place in life where we think I can. So, we started researching it more. My question about the Charlotte Mason Method : Is there any kind of base curriculum you can start with. I would like something that would transition us from their current public school studies to a free flowing curriculum, but I need a head start with their basic requirements. In Georgia homeschool they are required Reading, ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies.
Simply Charlotte Mason would fit the bill, if you walk through their free planning guide and purchase all needed materials. That would be my first pick.
I think most states require those subjects to be covered, so most any curriculum should work. It does help to talk to homeschoolers in your state or area that can give you help dealing with the official requirements. Each state has it’s own set of rules and talking to someone in your state is helpful…as long as they are knowledgeable of the rules. 😉
We used Heart of Dakota when my DC where little. We switched to following SCM’s free curriculum guide because I wanted my DC combined for as many subjects as possible. That’s one area you should look at…Do you want your children doing subjects together or separately? Some things like the 3Rs they would do on their own level. Subjects like science, history, fine arts, or Bible can easily been done with multiple ages. It’s really a personal preference. SCM combines everyone as much as possible, HOD only combines children whose ages are within a year or two of each other, and I believe MFW combines grades 2-8 together. Ambleside Online would only have them combined for a few of the fine arts areas.
Another think to do is look at lesson plans. If you visit the websites of these programs, you can always find sample pages of their programs. They are all laid out a bit differently and that may help you find one you like more than the others. Some have more detailed plans than others.
You may also find it helpful to read through a Charlotte Mason method book. A Charlotte Mason Education is my favorite. If you choose to create your own schedule (piecing together your own materials), SCM’s Planning Your CM Education is a great help. I use it every year when I’m making my lesson plans.
