…When I print the daily task list it is so tiny it isn’t functional anymore! Whatever change was made to the notes has made it print just a small portion of the note AND it shrinks the check-list down so small I can’t even see it.
It also makes it so one cannot see a whole note on screen, without scrolling so far to the right that the rest of the data disappears from the screen.
I don’t understand what the purpose of the change was; but it has made this system cumbersome at best and ultimately useless for me.
HELP!! I don’t want to NOT print my notes and I DON’T want to print just partial bits of my notes and I WANT to be able to see the checklists without a magnifying glass! It was FINE the way it was. Perhaps make a choice for people to either print notes as they were prior to this change; or not print notes and leave it at that.
I fear that any fix will be months down the road…it seems changes take an inordinate amount of time on this site. For the fee’s we pay I would think the webmaster could crank out changes and fixes a bit faster….seriously, folks. Maybe you need to outsource your programming.
I love the organizer, but now it is practically useless because I can’t see the itty-bitty printing and I have to scroll forever to the right see my notes!
Please get rid of the changes to the notes, pronto!
oh ,no. I just decided to use this organizer and purchased it last night. i was hoping to do the same thing you are talking about-printing out checklist and notes.- AH!! I hope they can fix it soon!!! Have you filled out a “contact” us form? I have done that recently and I have gotten responses quite quickly and effectively!
Thank you pj, I will try that avenue! The system works great overall, a few glitches here and there. I would recommend it highly, until now. I hope they address this.
I just printed and compared. It’s a bit smaller. I do see that notes have been cut off. I haven’t printed a report to see how that differs. It’s still very usable for me, but would be better with the bigger font and complete notes. The changes won’t prevent me from continuing to use it.
Is it possible to manually change the font size on our own? And, is there a way to continue having the notes print out, too? If we know something that can be done on our own, it solves things for everyone.
Dibby1, I’m sorry, but you are entirely off base. I’ve been a member of the SCM forum for years now and used the organizer for 2.5 years. I have NEVER seen a more responsive company! The SCM team listens to their customers (us) and takes suggestions to heart. I’ve never seen any fix take very long, much less an inordinate amount of time. Your frustration is understandable, but perhaps you might try using the company’s contact form, let them know of the problem and give at least a wee bit of time for them to address it before ranting like this.
The SCM forum has always been one of grace all around. The team of homeschooling families that run SCM are top notch and while not perfect, I’m confident that the tech support they provide is so far above the bar that it’s beyond comparison. I say this without any reservation as a person who has purchased EVERY software and online organizer available. Might I humbly suggest that you give a little grace to others, too.
As I’ve seen another homeschool organizer have feature/comment requests that they acknowledged they would add soon – back in 2008 – that aren’t there yet – believe me I have no complaints about the SCM Organizer!!! They have been very responsive.
I was a programmer ages ago – sometimes it does take a while to fix a problem just because it is difficult. Sometimes updates introduce bugs that are missed even with extensive testing.
I’m sure that if there is a problem it will be resolved expediciously. (I don’t print reports often…)
We recently updated the notes so they could handle line breaks. That was a frequent request because it previously would only put all of the text together as if it were a single paragraph. That was all the change was intended to be. Unfortunately, we didn’t discover the problem with long lines not wrapping or notes cutting off until after the feature was made live. We apologize for the inconvenience of that and we’re working on a fix.
The type size may be a separate issue that may not be happening for everyone. If you’re experiencing type that is too small it would be useful to know what Web browser software you have (and the version too, if you know how to get that). Go ahead and let us know here in this discussion and that will be a tremendous help.
Thank you to those who suggested getting in touch through our contact form. It is the quickest way to get our attention. @dlibby1angel, We got your message and will follow up with you there.
Those who have been around here for a while have probably heard most of this before, but let me give a quick overview of how we approach changes to the CM Organizer.
First, we give priority to fixing bugs that inconvenience all of you or make it hard to do what you need to accomplish every day. We obviously try to avoid those kinds of things happening but when they do we get them fixed as quickly as possible.
Second, new features and big changes are intentionally made slowly and deliberately. There are a few reasons for this:
1. We consider very seriously if a feature will make things more complicated or really be helpful. We believe that what we choose to leave out is just as important as what we add. That’s why you don’t see tons of confusing options, for example. The easier software is to use, the more planning, time, and hard work it takes to make it happen behind the scenes.
2. Changes have to consider everyone’s needs. We avoid adding features that only solve a very specific problem for only a few people, especially if that would add clutter or inconvenience for everyone else.
3. If we roll new things out too quickly it can shake up your world and we don’t want to do that to you. Changes are somewhat gradual to give you time to digest them and learn the new things over time.
4. You want the CM Organizer to be here for the long haul so we’re careful to make changes at a pace that is financially sustainable. We actually do outsource the development to some very talented software developers. It is important that we keep them around by being able to pay them in a timely manner and that the costs are covered by the subscription we charge.
I hope that glimpse into our philosophy of working is helpful. We so appreciate the trust and support so many of you have shown us over the years, and do not take it lightly.
On my screen, the notes aren’t actually cut off, but I do have to scoll over to see them all. When I printed my schedule this morning, the last one or two letters of my longest notes were not printed, but no notes were completely lost.
I actually like the smaller font – I print off schedules every day for my children, and the smaller font saves paper. I can read it without discomfort. I agree withTailorMade that it may be useful to be able to change font size on our own to suit everyone.
I also have to echo Christie’s satisfaction with the SCM team. I have always found their service to be prompt and pleasant. 🙂
I never print my notes, as I have not needed to do that. I have been a faithful, paying user of the SCM Organizer since 2009, and I could not be happier with the simplicity, ease of use, customer service, and overal function of the program.
As someone who is married to a computer programmer, I can tell you that most fixes are not as easy as “go in, highlight that bit of code, delete/change it, refresh”. Sometimes it can take days for a programmer to find exactly where a bug is in the code. Also, $9.95/month is NOT an exorbitant amount of money for a program that is so useful. And if Doug, who is the webmaster, were to “crank out changes” as you said, the quality of this site and of the Organizer would not be at the caliber that it is.
I consider the SCM Team to be friends, so please don’t speak to them that way. They bend over backwards to help us–and I’ve been a forum member since 2008. I’ve never once felt like changes on here take too long or that they’re not doing their jobs. They run this company with excellence and are always willing to do whatever it takes to make their products better.
Thanks Doug, Sonya, Karen, Jordan, John, Ruth, and everyone else! You guys and gals make this place awesome!
OK, yes, yes, I agree the SCM team is WONDERFUL!!! and RESPONSIVE and Fabulous, but I am SO glad to read this thread, because I read about the changes and didn’t really understand what they would mean for me and figured they probably wouldn’t change anything BUT after reading the thread I went to print out the daily plan and have to agree – this has created some problems for how I use the organizer, kinda big ones, THOUGH it does sound as if they are going to be address from Doug’s reply. So, I print off a the daily plan every Sunday evening – I “show” assignments not scheduled for today and I “show” upcoming assignments to get five days (or assignments) worth of things for all the subjects where we’ll be doing multiple things for the week. My font is uncomfortably small and I have pretty good vision – I print out for my kiddos too and they mark off assignments daily – there’s no way that they will be able to write what they’ve done in the small amount of space – what is normally 3 pages is now just half a page. TOO small.
Also, my notes show on the screen, but I do have to scroll WAY right to read a fairly short paragraph and when I print the notes do not show up past the first dozen words. I often type a note to my kids explaining an assignment so this is a pretty big problem as well. I am using firefox, but I don’t know what version – probably not a super recent one as I installed in on my computer about a year and a half ago and am not sure that I’ve updated it at all.
I hope that’s helpful and if there’s any way to fix the font VERY soon, that would be SO helpful, as I’m not sure what I’ll do when it comes time to print them for next week. The notes are less of a concern as I can handwrite instructions by the assignments, but only if the font is bigger and I have more space by each resource.
Thanks!!! Eagerly awaiting your reply (should I just use a different browser for the font problem for the time being????)
I am having the same font problem with IE and again I probably have a really old version of that because I never use it (and whenever I used to do updates to that it seemed to cause lots of problems with my computer.)
AND for those of you printing DAILY reports – I highly recommend the trick that suzuki mom taught me. Open up “show upcoming assignments” and you get FIVE assignments that will print out. This saves me lots of paper and lots of time. I only print once a week and I only check off assignments once a week. I give my girls the weekly “plan” printout and they check off their work on the paper daily and then at the end of the week, I go back and quickly check off all the work they did for the week and then print out the following weeks “daily plan” by “showing assignments not scheduled for today” and “showing upcoming assignments” for every subject that they need to do multiple assignments in. It works GREAT!!! I LOVE, LOVE doing this!!! I was the one who hated checking off assignments daily and would get behind and then keep putting it off and then could never catch up because I would be SO far behind. This has solved that problem, because I only have to do it once a week and I need to print out the next assignments. It’s teaching my girls to be responsible to letting me know which work has been done and freeing up lots of my time. SUPER!
Okay, I am using IE Version 10. I’m using it on a windows computer and sometimes on my iPad. I have the same issue whether I print from the computer or the iPad.
I did notice that when I do not have notes for a child, their list prints like it always has, in the normal size. When there are notes, it prints only the first few words — only six or seven, depending on the length of them.
I print to an HP 1020 laserjet and an HP officejet Pro 8100. Same result on both. I hope this is helpful to you.
I’m glad to hear that those of you who have used this system for years find that issues are resolved quickly. I appreciate your input and that of Doug. My concern was based upon reading past posts where change requests were made and response was quite vague as to when or even if their request would ever progress beyond the oft mentioned “wish-list”.
I have only just begun using the organizer in full this year. I tested the waters late last year and like what I saw. Doug explained very well how each idea is vetted thoroughly before it is either added or disregarded. I do appreciate the care that is taken and really am pleased with the site. It sure beats trying to hand-write everything! A few glitches get annoying…such as having to click something as “finished” repeatedly and refreshing the browser before it actually happens. I can deal with glitches…
As for me and my family, this issue is a big one and I assumed it would just get added to the ever-growing wish-list and that would be that. I am happy to discover that issues are treated differently than wish-items.
Thanks for the tips on printing just weekly. I may try that, once this problem is addressed. If I tried it now, I think it would print too small.
I have only been using the organizer for about 1 week. I also have only been printing a check off sheet for 3 days. I do want to say the first day the print was really small, but I liked using less paper. The second day the print was much larger, the sheet was 2 pages and there was no extra assignments on it. Today it came out a more regular size. I am using Google Chrome, the computer I print from has Windows Vista. I do love the organizer and am not trying to complain, just letting you know what is going on. Also, My notes do keep getting cut off, I just normally handwrite it in after printing. Thank you for all the time and effort put in 🙂
