As most of you know, we moved this summer. Our summer “break” went from the usual 3-4 weeks to about 8 weeks. In that time, it seems, my ds10 has COMPLETELY forgotten how to do math. He was on lesson 18 in MUS Delta when we stopped school back in June. During our first week back, it has taken him 4 days to do 1 worksheet and 1 test, and that is with help from dh and me. Even things that he learned how to do years ago, like subtraction w/ borrowing, he is just looking at us with a blank stare and trying to do 0-4 and stuff like that. Instead of multiplying, he’s reverted back to skip counting. I just don’t know where he’s coming up with some of this stuff! So obviously, I can’t go all the way back to Beta and start over w/ subtraction and borrowing, and then multiplication. I don’t know what’s going on.
I get it that moving totally rearranged our schedule, but it seems like he has gone from being super quick and good at math to being completely intimidated and ignorant.
I would start back at the beginning of Delta and do just 1 worksheet for each lesson. So Monday do 1F (or whatever you still have that he didn’t do the first time around). Tuesday do 2F. Wednesday do 3F, and so on. I would even simply do them with him, working as a team, for the first week of them. Hopefully by the second week he’ll be back to remembering the basics. Don’t skip ahead to lesson 18! Keep going in order so you can catch any topics he needs a refresher on (so week 2 you’ll be doing 6-10, week three will be 11-15, and by the 4th week you’ll make it up to where you were.
That is similar to what we’ve done this last few weeks with Makayla in PreAlgebra. We did something different most of the summer for math so when we were going to pick PreAlgebra back up (she was on lesson 11) we did 1 page from each of the past lessons first. If she had trouble with a concept we only did 1/2 the page and then did the other 1/2 later in the day or the next day. It’s worked beautifully.
Don’t panic, it is in there somewhere! My daughter does this every year so I build in a review of a few weeks at the start of every year and after a few weeks everything comes flooding back and she is fine to carry on.
