Ok Ladies. I am most likely overthinking all this but I am befuddled by the overlapping of years.  Let me see if I can put it into words.  Currently we have 2 ds 2 years apart.  Ds1 begins module 1 at 6 yrs old. Ds2 joins us in his 1st grade year at 6yrs old and we will then be on module 3, 3rd poet study, etc.  So for Ds2’s 11th and 12th gr yrs he would then be doing the 2nd round for him for Module 1 and then 2.  But some of the poets/topics seem better fitting for the younger years (ex. Robert Loius Stevenson).  Would I need to rearrange for ex. the poets, so he ends HS with more complex ones?  Also, doing the Literature read alouds together is the plan, but would I need to read seperately for Ds2 1st and 2nd yrs so he doesn’t miss out on Winnie the Pooh, and others and let him listen in on Ds1 reads. ….  Thank you all for any feedback.  Am I missing something simple here? 🙂

Don’t panic, you are not missing anything!  We have had a few posts regarding how to teach multiple ages lately so my first suggestion would be to go back and look at those.  Yes, the hist/geo/Bible modules work the way you have posted and the previous posts go into more detail on how and why that is no big deal.  As far as poets, artists and composers being more fitting for a younger child and more complex for an older, I think I would stick with the module years for the eldest, but sneak in some one on one quality time with the younger to do RLS.  It could be like your special time together while your older one works independently on something else.  We also stick with the older child’s lit selections but when our baby comes along and is finally school aged, I think I will just start two lit times or assign some of the lit for the older ones to be independent reading.  Also, the older children can read the lit selections to the younger while you hang laundry, do your Bible study, or sneak a snack!

Thank you! Yes I have gone thru and read all the posts (I have been bad recently about checking the forum at least daily, devouring all info and processing over here!) and am fine with the SCM modules starting at various ones, but was curious as to the Literature, poets, scripture memory, you know all the other wonderful things that can be done as a family 🙂  And didn’t want the younger ones missing out on anything.  Yes, I think I will incorporate two lit times which would be easier to track I think than hopping all over the schedule.

I have SCM as my homepage so every time I get on the computer I am checking the forum.  I have found a ton of information to help us.  My girls are 5 tomorow and 7 1/2 so we are on mod 1 this year and our younger has kept up and enjoyed the lit selections just fine (her narration is not as good obviously) but I definately want to read the Little House Books again with them when the baby gets to 4 years (we are adopting so who knows when I will have a 4 year old again!)  but I guess by then,  my oldest will be old enough to read to the younger ones and I could listen while I do other things.  I always want to read to them, even when they are older, so it is a good thing SM is a reading based curriculum!  Best wishes in planning, don’t let it get too complicated and you will be fine.  There is a great planning series in the blog archives that I print out each year to plan so if you have not checked that out yet it may help with the details.  Have fun!
