Hi. I have a question about beginning reading. Ok. I’ve followed the SCM guide for ever and have used the rod and staff readers, which we love. With my now 7yo boy, he is a natural reader I guess, and we have been doing the workbooks that go along with the readers, but I’m just wondering if it’s necessary to continue. I like them for the reading comprehension, which he has never had any problems with. At first I liked them for the phonics, but if he’s reading well, do I need to have him do the extra work?? OR should I just have him continue to read the stories only to me?? He is getting ready to go into the Busy Times and More Busy Times book. The only reason we haven’t finished More Days Go By is because kids have been sick. Any thoughts or advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.

I think I’m struggling because my 10yo girl STILL struggles with reading and spelling. Right now at this very moment she is asking me how to spell nicely…and she has NO idea. She has guessed n-i-s, n-i-a, n-i-e, and the struggle continues. She is reading the Little House series right now and loves it, but I KNOW when she comes to a word she doesn’t know she either makes it up, or skips it. HELP!!! Right now for spelling she is doing spelling through copywork BOOK A!! She is almost done with it….and will go to book b, but shouldn’t she be a bit further?? Yes, we have Spelling Wisdom Book 1 for her and I also have Book 3 for my 13yo son. Boys don’t seem to struggle with much of anything. SHE seems to struggle with EVERYTHING! I think some of it is laziness, but some of it is just a struggle I think. Again ANY thoughts, ideas, direction, or advise would be GREATLY appreciated.

I don’t have any suggestions about your 7yo as I am not familiar with those readers…maybe someone else will chime in with advice there.

I do have a question about your dd. Do you feel like she needs so more in depth instruction with phonics/spelling? Or do you think there could be some underlying learning issue? I ask because sometimes learning issues like dyslexia can sometimes appear as “laziness” (which you mentioned above) as well as spelling issues, etc.

Also, get her eyes checked? My dd had a hard time with her reading taking off and the eye doc thought she had some focussing issues- she was working so hard on seeing what she was reading she couldn’t remember how to spell it. I did buy an electronic spell checker for her and within a few months she was much improved..she just needed to see it a bunch of times ( we only used the checker after she tried it phonetically)

Sometimes they are just plain old late starters- but they have lots of endurance once they do take off 🙂

I have a ds8 and he does reading only (no workbook) of R&S readers. And it is followed by oral narration (comprehension in a CM style). His other reading is done independently of science and history and he comes to me for narration. Sometimes he comes to me for help with a new word.

I’d drop the extra work with your son. It’s the sort of thing narration is supposed to take the place of.

On the topic of spelling, I recommend Denise Eide’s book the Logic of English. She does also have a curriculum to go with it. The idea is that she can make English spelling more intuitive for kids it doesn’t automatically make sense for.
