Hi all! My name is Sam and I am a mom to soon to be 4 little ones. My kids are 5,3,1, and the baby is due in June. My son will be a ‘kindergartner’ in the fall and I am planning to homeschool him. I don’t really know too much about the charlotte mason approach. I actually found out about it by taking a curriculum approach test and it was my highest match. From what I have read it seems like a good fit. At any rate, has anyone in here used the explode the code series? My son is a very gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now type kid and I’m thinking of using Happy Phonics with explode the code as a supplement. I was wondering how fast paced the explode the code work books are and typically how many do you get through in one year of teaching? Does it depend on how quick the child goes through them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Welcome, Sam!  I do have a friend who uses Eplode the Code and loves it, but I started homeschool late (this past September with 5th and 2nd graders) and both my boys already read very well.  I know there are others here who use it, so stay tuned, the info you seek shall be found!

    Welcome, Sam.

I have not used it, either, but have heard good things about it.

Best wishes as you begin your hsing journey.

    Welcome to the forum, Sam!

I don’t have any advice on Explode the Code since I am just beginning with a Kinder this fall as well.  In my research of CM I found Sonya’s video (link is below) on phonics helpful.  I am sure others that have used the curriculum will chime in.

    Blessings on your journey.

We used Explode the Code as a supplement to our regular reading curriculum, also the pre-Code books with names like Get Set for the code, etc. I liked them overall. I have heard complaints which make sense that their pictures are very vague and hard to interpret. So for later books they might have a picture of someone handing a cashier money and they want the child to write “spend” as the word. But you have to know (or remember from previous exercises) what word they associate with that picture. It is not inherently obvious.

I never used them much past level 2 or 3. I found we didn’t need them anymore at that point.

Hi Sam!   Welcome to this forum.  This is one of the best places to get CM answers!!!  If you are looking for a phonics program and are open to checking out items other than Explode the Code, I would suggest looking at the All About Reading Program.  http://www.allaboutlearningpress.com/  It may or may not be something that will work for your child, but we have been using it successfully and I like to tell others about it.
