Headphones? Earbuds?

Is there any reason to prefer one over the other?  I am not huge on the idea of using any, but there are times that we do use them.  I don’t want to cause hearing problems by too much loud sound kept right on the ears.  Do earbuds pose any more of a problem since they are in the ear instead of surrounding it?

Both are generally bad. Apple became wise to this and put a volume limit that is capable of being set and locked by the parent. The earbuds do pose a higher risk due to their proximity to the ear and the fact that if seated well would not allow a parent to “hear” if they were set too loud. Any time a device is used the volume level should be set to an appropriate level and locked out to prevent long term damage to the ears.

My kids use both, some prefer headphones, others ear buds.  We set the rule that you are not allowed to change the volume without checking with an adult first.  One infraction loses the kindle for a day, second infraction loses the kindle for a week.  They love audio books and the occasional music so they generally just obey.

Another thing we use is a Bluetooth speaker ($15 at WalMart) to broadcast the audio book or music.

I’ve never been able to use either.  Wearing them makes my ears and my TEETH hurt very badly.  I was a music major and had assigned listening in the music library.  I would leave almost nauseous from having to use headphones.  Weird.

If you are worried about radiations it would go directly in the ear. I didn’t like that idea so I got radiation free air tubes headphones for my son.

No radiation is produced using electricity and magnets

I’ve read that earbuds are worse because they build up pressure in the ear.  I got some bluetooth earbuds for Christmas and have noticed pressure in my ears if they aren’t in just right, so I can see this leading to problems down the road.  DH and I prefer the “kid safe” headphones that have volume controls.  They won’t go above a certain volume level, even if they turn the device up all the way.
