Why don’t the books say very clearly if they are abridged or not? And also, books like “Pilgrim’s Progress”…do I want to get the unabridged and unedited version? Is there a definite publisher or series of books that is always unabridged and unedited? Thanks. :o)

I think we’ve all had those oh-great moments when we suddenly realized that a book we had bought and started to use was actually an abridged version. Unfortunately, it’s very hard to tell sometimes. I don’t know of a publisher who guarantees only unabridged versions. I’m always looking on the back covers, on the copyright pages, and in any notes or prefaces for clues.

I thought I’d dredge up this thread to ask….
….does anyone know of a good site to search by ISBN number in order to determine if a particular edition is abridged or not? I’m looking up books on paperbackswap, and they don’t usually mention that.

I just look the book up in other places-Amazon, B & N, elsewhere-and read the small synopses of the book. Most of the time, I can find out that way.

I did try that with Amazon, and I did get the right title but not the particular ISBN number that was available through Paperback Swap. Sooooo….I decided just to put the ISBN number into my yahoo search box. It brought up a few things, among which was a listing on GoodReads for this exact number. It didn’t specifically say that it was unabridged, but considering that the abridged version was only 64 pages and the GoodReads listing was 315 pages, I’d say I probably hit the nail on the head!
