Have I made a Mistake

  • I have used the organizer in the past and enjoyed it, however in this last year of school we are doing things in a different way. I paid for the year and now wonder if I made a mistake. We are covering a lot of reading this week, but because the girls are older I am giving them the chapters/pages of the books at the beginning of the week and it is then up to them when they read them – I am making them more accountable for the schedule, and have typed out a plan for each book for them to use. Having done that, I now have no idea how to put it in the organizer and how to use it…is there a way to do this, or would I do better without it? I have the plans already typed up for the year, but now it does not make sense in the organiser because I don’t want to put a set day in there to read – just that it needs to be done during the week. Any ideas anyone? I think I may have made an expensive boo boo. Linda

Linda, Can you mark the dividions as “weekly readings done throughout the week”?  Then in the daily part assign those /readings/books for a Saturday, and then when the girls have finished the readings just bring up the resource the day completed and mark it done?  Another thing you might do is just assign it to everyday and just mark it as worked on until it it finished at the end of the week.  That way your records reflect that it was looked at or worked on everyday, without looking like they read 24 hours straight in one day.  Maybe I am not even answering your basic question…lol

That is a good idea but I am thinking I have given them more to do then than is necessary…they already have a chart typed up for each book in their folders which tells them what to read each week and they then tick and date when they complete the work, so the record is already there – I am thinking that the organizer for me is now redundant…and I don’t need to make more work for myself, do you understand what I am saying?

    Hi Linda,

I’m not sure if it will be redundant for you or not…  you have each book scheduled out seperately in your paper plan? (basically a “follow the table of contents” type of plan?

I’m moving to a “weekly work” type of schedule myself this year…  I am going to schedul all our books for everyday of the week – and then I can print off a “weekly” to-do list (opening up the “upcoming assignments” for things that are done more than once….)….

But yes, it might be redundant, if your paper plan works well if things aren’t done the week you want it to get done….

Yep,I have the books typed out and either chapters or pages to be read each week of each book and all the terms set out…so they just have their weekly sheet and follow that. Math, Science and German are already scheduled in their books so no issues with that. It is not strictly follow the table of contents, I have a chart with week #, Pages or chapters to be read, then date completed. I have worked out what they need to read each week to finish books at the appropriate times in the term and that is already typed up in a notebook for them to follow. Some of the books have long chapters so I have split them and made that clear in my schedule. I think I might need to ask Doug if I can get a refund and just pay for this month that I have used as it seems to me the more I write this, that it won’t be as useful as it used to be for me. Does not seem much point in entering it all now…I scheduled a couple of obvious things but it just does not seem to fit, because it is more an independent schedule. Silly me…..should have thought about it more before I signed up again.

Ok – so what if they miss a reading in a book the one week?  Does it get things all messed up?

If not, then yes, the organizer might be less helpful.

If yes – then it might still be useful….

I know when I did AO, in theory the organizer wouldn’t be helpful, as all the books were scheduled out, etc.  But as we got behind in some subjects but not others – the paper schedule started getting complicated.  Using the SCMO helped me keep it all worked out.

We are doing AO again this year – and as I’m in the planning stage, I keep wondering if using the SCMO is redundant (as I’m not scheduling the books for specific days…  it would be VERY helpful if I was – but I’m trying to let the student be more independant in picking when to do various things for the older… and for the younger, I am using a 4 day week schedule, and the days could fall on any physical day)    BUT, then I remember how messed up we got doing the AO schedule the first time… (ok, we are in week 3 in math, week 5 with history, week 7 with science, week 4 with most of literature, except we haven’t finished the shakespeare reading from last week – so need to finish week 3 of that…..)  argh!

I am doing pretty much what you are, we have set times for the science, math and German – but everything else is on a flex schedule and the girls need to make sure it gets done. With reading catch up is not so difficult as there are evenings and drive times/appointment waiting time to catch up. I am using a lot of books from AO year 11 this year, plus some of my own finding. I don’t want to tie the girls to reading a book on a set day, I want them to pace themselves as they would normally be in college by now had it not been for illness, so I need them to have that same kind of accountability. My daughter’s also sometimes like to do reading on weekends or writing on weekends as they have less on their plates, so it is a very flexible schedule for this year. I am thinking that if they miss a reading on the chart, they know they have to catch up and should be able to keep that up. I am not having them narrate every book, we discuss a lot, they write and narrate what we consider the core books in writing, but that is not a lot of them. I think at this age, reading is something they need to be able to schedule for themselves….this is their last year, and they need to be independent in this I feel, that way they can grow and learn the very important time management skills that still need a little work, though they are pretty good. I will think about it for the rest of the day, and if anyone else has ideas please let me know.

Linda, If it doesn’t work out for you get in touch and we’ll be happy to work out a pro-rated refund for the time you have left.

Yes…the SCM team is superb!!!  I’ve just introduced a friend to this site who has been so thrilled and has bought some items. Truly a blessing to be connected here:) Gina

P.S. Hope you get it figured out, Linda!

Doug, I really want to make it work, so I was thinking maybe I would load things in until the end of the month and see how it looks and feels, then if it does not look like working or if it looks like it adds more work, I would be so appreciative if you would do as you say and work out a pro-rated refund. I will spend the next days adding things, and scheduling and see how it looks…and then let you know. Would that be ok with you?

Thank you so much for your help….I really want it to work, so I am going to see what happens…and then decide by end July when I will have used a month I think. Very much appreciate you all who work to make things perfect for us. Thank you. Linda

Linda, if you end up working out a way to utilize the CMO effectively in your situation, I would love to hear how you do it… 🙂
