Hi! I’m new to Charlotte Mason and have been lately reading all I can (in my spare time – ha!). I’m so excited about it – I currently have an almost 3 yr old, so I know I’m a little early I guess 🙂 But as I was reading through a lot of the stuff, it kind of reminded me of a book I read a few months ago called Playful Learning by Mariah Bruehl. I was just curious if anyone else here has read or used that book and if you think it is CM-compatible. It seems to me many of the things in it are but I have very limited knowledge on the subject! Thanks!

I have read it and love it!!  She definitely leans more to Waldorf and Montersorri style but I use many of her suggestions in my home.  CM wasn’t very big on making “kid friendly” space.  She thought it was important for a child to learn in regular settings of life.  I whole heartedly agree with that idea but I am a very organized person and the playful learning book helped me catergorize play ideas – hope that makes sense.  Others may disagree, though I don’t think they will, but I do not feel that I have compromised CM’s ideals by adding some of the PL concepts.  After all most of her stuff is beautiful, well selected items.  Hope that helps.

Yes, thank you – that is kind of what I was thinking. Even with the “kid-friendly” spaces discussed in PL, Pl still talked about the children at that school in Italy using glass and other quality materials and she was flabbergasted that they didn’t get broken and destroyed, but the kids learned to I guess “respect” quality items and had no problems using them. I also was reading some CM thing about using good quality art supplies, and I was immediately reminded of PL where she suggests the same thing. I like PL for the organization as well! 🙂 Good to know others have discovered this book too because I love it, and really felt like it would fit nicely into the CM philosophy!
