I’ve seen book lists, but few solid recommendations for living books for Canadian history, but today my 12 year old says that is what he wants to learn about next year. I was hoping to put it off for a couple of years, but i may have to consider it more seriously. Can anyone recommend anything for 4th and 7th graders? Wouldn’t it be nice if a Canadian CM mom would put a guide together?
Hey, I’m sure you’ve seen the plan on my website that goes along with AO – but I don’t have anything detailed for a 12 year old yet. I have a hard time finding really good CM friendly Canadian History resources….
I’m assuming you’ve checked out Donna Ward’s items. I don’t really like some of her books or suggestions (they aren’t CM based) but some of the books are good.
I have Modern History through Canadian Eyes. It is a guide for helping you put together your own chronological history of Canada. I have used it for the past two school years. It is not a spine. It is basically an outline of Canada’s history broken up into main time periods and arranged chronologically with many resource suggestions for each time period/topic. The book suggestions could cover different types of teaching methods. I find it useful and even if I don’t use some of the book suggestions (you wouldn’t be able to anyways there are to many) it will often set me on the right trail for finding what I am looking for in a different resource covering the same topic.
I will soon be planning our third year of Canadian Studies which is usually history for two terms and things like geography/government/social studies, etc. for the third. It will be for grades 6, 4 and 2. I am planning on using MHtCE to plan everything out.
For the 4th grader, I’d use My First History of Canada by Donalda Dickie as a spine. Actually, in our house, I would read it aloud to both kids and “beef up” the history for the 7th grader a bit. It is a lovely book and a great spine. We use Story of Canada for an older child to read through (the first chapter does contain evolution, though). Spirit of Canada is also a wonderful anthology!
I also second the use of Barbara Greenwood’s books. We love them, here! For an older child, I like Maxine Trottier’s The Circle of Silver Chronicles trilogy and Jeremy’s War 1812 by John Ibbitson. I also like Madeleine Takes Command by Ethel C. Brill.
